This is a step by step guide for creating a map. It's designed for people
who have never made a mod.

I very STRONGLY advise that you make your first map EXACTLY
the same as the one in the tutorial so that at all stages you can check your files against mine.

Creating your first map is a complicated business & there are lots of little things that can go wrong,
if you just read the tutorial & decide to go off & make a full size map of Australia or something like
that, then you will get yourself into a lot of trouble.

Also included is a tutorial on Textures.

If your interested in making a map.

Just do the Manam Island map word for word task for task.

If you go off to a large mapping region at first you'll get all buggered up.

Manam Island may be small but Kevins awesome tutorial gives you a wealth of knowledge, info and downloads.

Please do what Kevin says and follow the tutorial step by step.

After you complete Manam Island then the whole world is open for map making.

Kevin's map making and texturing tutorials are worth more then gold.

I've been trying to start making a map and have indeed closely followed the tutorial. The part on Microdem is very easily followed and works like a charm.

However on setting up a copy of IL-2 as a map making program, I always seem to run into a snag when trying to open up the new map to mod.

I also seem to have found a contradiction - or so it seems to me.

On page 8 the tutorial specifically states that the MODS folder should be deleted in the map building version of IL-2.

However on pages 9 and 10, I see the MODS folder back again in several screenshots.

Is this correct? Did I miss something somewhere?

kevinp

You need a MODs folder to put your maps in but the reason I tell you to remove the original
MODs folder is so that you can make a clean start with the map building game.

A new MODs folder is created when you install the "HB_PacificIslands" map.
You can see this on page 9. I try to let the pictures tell the story rather than spell
everything out.

If your map building game doesn't work, go to page 10 of the newest version of
my tutorial. There is some new help there.

And I just printed the (older) tutorial and had it bound up nicely for easy reference ... reminds me of the way our exam material used to look ... ha ha

But seriously, this should help. Are there any other big changes to the tutorial?

kevinp

There's only one major change to my tutorial. On page 34 there is a link
to the Map_c Toolbox by Redwulf_32. This is a much better map_c converter
which I didn't know about when I first wrote the tutorial.

Hi Kevin,

Map building is serious business.

I have been peeking all the islands on my project.

At least I have an eye for detail and was a landscaper/gardener by trade back in Aus.

The natural aspect is quite easy for me.

There are a lot of tideous time consuming jobs to do in order to get a descent looking map.

My poor mouse wheel I'll think I'll need a new one soon he he he.

But at the moment lots of time off so I can enjoy doing the time consuming jobs.

Once the detailing is complete then the fun begins with texturing etc.

Hell of a lot of research too.

But as Fly zo says if you build it they will come.

Cheers Kirby

Hello,

Has somebody ever created an Antarctica or Groenland map? I would love to see some subs on the surface ice... I guess there wouldn't be too much to put on these maps, apart for a few radar stations and miles and miles and miles of snow....
Seeing icebergs would be cool too.
Anyway...
Back to my freezing room :-) Just joking.

Unless there is an alternative, the Geographical survey site which supplies the raw data for these maps, does not provide maps for these areas curiously enough. Upper Norway and points north are simply not available ... and the same applies way down south too ...

What about this? Could we make something of the data available on this web site for IL-2 1946?

I only have read the 1st tutorial until now, but when I save, all buildings I placed are gone when I load. I am doing something wrong?
BTW could you make another tutorial about atomaticpopulating cities for example or mor important: Creating Airfields.
Sorry if I asked something now explained in V2, I

kevinp

Check out page 59 of my tutorial. You probably haven't moved the "actors.static" file from
the "maps/manam" folder to the "Mapmods/maps/manam" folder.

I can't make a tutorial about automaticpopulating of cities because I don't know how to do it.
I've never made a city, & don't want to, because my computer is too slow for realistic cities.

Creating airfields is very easy, & fun. Load one of the other maps to see how they have made
the airfields, if you like one, import it into your own map. The only real problem with making
airfields is that the Airdrome points don't work if they are too close to buildings & this can be
very frustrating sometimes.

I am such an idiot!

Yes, I didn

kevinp

Yes, please post some screenshots.

What was the most difficult part of building your map & is this your first map.

Ok, i composited my screens together, so i must only upload 2 pics.

But first, I answer your questions.
Yes, its my first map, but I buildet often Missions and populated some farms or stuff, I also already worked with textures, but currently I am making them for the default Berlin map, so I didn
