open canopies? - Phas3e - 28.01.2008

Im asking this as you guys seem to pull off every request asked of you..

Is it possible to have more if not all machines with open..able canopies?
If you can just do the likes of the Spitfire V and IX (as the onews added later have the ability)
thats great.
But what would rock is if the 190, Mustang, hurricane..the list goes on, could do it too.

I bow to your greatness Big Grin

Some one did it for one of the P-40s

edit:>

HUH! how come it has posted me before I/JG54_Suicider, I posted after him not befor???

Yes can you pls? And to the planes like the Bf-109 and the outers that open their canopes sideways or something when above 100 km/h for instance to fall down like in Lock on?

- duffys tavern - 28.01.2008

Phas3e, did I understand you say, some of the Spitfire canopys now open? Would love to see the P-40s. Someone has it stay open but not slide. Be nice to have the TBF, B5N, B6N, P-47, P-51, Hurricane, etc.

yes you can do this usually by editing the .him file & moving the canopy back - but i gues it all depends if the him file has a canopy contained in it

Re: open canopies? - depalmer - 28.01.2008

The P40 E and M cry out for an open Canopy.

- FANATIC MODDER - 29.01.2008

P-36 too

- Moggster - 29.01.2008

The Hurricanes especially are crying out for an open canopy. A lot of pilots during the Battle of Britain flew with their canopies open just in case they needed to bail out as the fuel tank was just in front of the dashboard.

I know I would

Deleting the sliding portion of the canopy of some early Mig-3's would be interesting too. I've seen several photos of aircraft operating without them.

Bee, you most probably saw photos of Mig 1's, which came into service before the Mig 3 and had an open cockpit. It could be that there were some Mig 3's without the sliding portion, but i guess what you saw were Mig 1's.

- depalmer - 30.01.2008

Early LaGG 3's often had an open cockpit too as in an emergency it was near impossible to punch out. They even did that in the Winter. Squadron Signal's book on LaGG fighters in action shows an open cockpit LaGG series 1 along the ice road.

Being able to open more (or even all) canopies would be really cool, expecially for more realistic take-off and landing.
As Suicider suggests, 109, 262 and other sideways opening canopies should get damaged and even get ripped from the plane if opened at a too high speed but maybe 100kph is a bit too soon. More like 200 for not being able to close it again and 250 or something like that for actually fall off.
Anyways, that's secondary and probably very difficult to do.

Back-sliding canopies are more important IMO because many ww2 pilots flying planes with that kind of canopy used to open them for take off and landing, while pilots flying planes with sideways-opening canopies (obviously enough) did not.
Also, I support the suggestions about modified fighters converted from enclosed to open cockpits. Those were fairly common, there should be some of them for us too.

Real Fw 190 can't fly with open canopy, because then there was some problems with airflow around rear parts and with exhausts in cockpit.

ki84 1a,b,c need this alsoTongue

- KG64_Ðørvånski - 30.10.2008

i think this is a great idea! i think more older planes need to have opening canopies, not planes like the mig-9.
