More realistic roads - kevinp - 24.05.2009

I've been searching for any road or rail plates that someone might have made which can be arranged
on the ground in the same way as runway & taxi plates.

I know that there are already rail plates in the game, but these are limited to only three types, & they
don't look very good.

I've been having a go at making my own & I think they make a real difference to the way the landscape looks.
Only problem is that they are only effective on flat ground, trying to place them on hillsides is too tricky.

They look great! How do they look on hillsides? Is it only when they go up a hillside at an angle?

- agracier - 24.05.2009

They do look incredibly well done and much better than the standard roads ...

But don't tell me you have to place them bit by bit ... if so, that would require a lifetime to complete a map ... surely a labor of love, but what an amount of man hours that would need.

Can they be placed automatically like normal roads?

Spectacular and most needed IMO

Really really many thanks.
I need this so much for a map idea that I have.

Keep it up and thanks again.

In the third image, have you really got the animated train following the curve as it appears to be in the picture?

- spitfire13 - 24.05.2009

Is there a link for this, they look awesome.
Thanks, Spitty

Great job. I agree with you, I have alway thought the game has needed better road plates and they make a big difference in the looks of it.

Whenever I have had to built roads, I end up using the airfield ramp sides and ends. In this way I have been able to place them whereever I have built airbases. which always is on flat ground, but I have also been able to place some up hills. The real problem is that one can not carve out level sections of terrain, as real road workers can with a bulldozer. Roads running horizontaly along the side of a hill makes the road look silly as it lay flat against ths hill side. The other difficult area is when you reach the crest of the hill or bumpy ground. when this happens a point is reached where the pieces are too long and it creates an overhang or seesaw effect. This seesaw effect is what causes the ground textures to shift and change as you taxi along the runway. The plates seem to rock or tip over as you go over high spots The only solution to this, I thinks, would be a set of mixed lenghts. Something like very short, short medium and long lenghts in this way it could be possible to butt one up the crest line and over lap the crest with the really short ones to get rid of the overhangs .

Will you make these available as a mod?
Now if someone would come up with a set of objects specificly for building ports and harbours.

Fantastic! the one thing that lets the maps down is the non-radius road and rail routes - your efforts are such an improvement, keep up the good work this is a significant addition to realistic map making particularly if you can address the non-level situations; good luck, nice one 8)

Very, VERY VERY impressive! Best rails and roads ever! They bring much needed added realism to the map.
Being a rail fan I have to say that your curves really look fantastic!
Thank you for your hard work.

These roads are based on runway plates, therefore the plate is often much larger than the section
of road that appears on it. Thats one of the reasons that it's difficult to place them on hills. They
can go on a slope, but it needs to be an even slope. The problems start when the slope changes angle.

They have to be placed by hand, & they are quite short, so it is a lot of work, although the buildings
in the pictures took me almost as long to place as the roads. They are designed to be used in
conjunction with the existing road textures, so most of the map would have the normal straight roads
& you would only use these in towns, airfield barracks & workshops etc.

The train in the picture really is going around the bend. You wouldn't believe how many times I've
run this mission just to watch it. It moves beautifully, no sign at all that its not really attached to the rails. Found out how to do it from fabianfred.

I haven't finished these yet, still need to clean up the ends of the rails so they join up neatly, also may
need to make winter roads. They are all new objects, so the static.ini needs to have extra lines added.
If anyone is interested I will provide a link when they are ready.

great kevimp! ..and I think we ALL are interested.. and I push eveyone modder and you to collaborate to solve the problems you've found to make easy the application of this beatiful mod for every map Wink. regards
