Convair B-36 Peacemaker? - MGMSwordsman - 11.06.2009

Has anyone thought of doing a B-36 model for inclusion in the sim? The B-36 was the largest mass-produced piston engine aircraft ever made and made it's first flight in 1946.

I'm sure it would be a very complex aircraft to model, but it would be a great addition. Smile

The jets were added late in the production. Anything close to 1946 would of had 6 radial's without the jets.

Ah, I see.

Still, wouldn't hurt to have both versions... just for good measure, of course.

If you notice the B29 in the background of gibbage's pic, you can really see how humongous this plane is Confusedhock: Tongue

will the airfields be big enough? Still, it's a moot point unless someone fancies having a go at making this.

Unfortunately anything close to 1946 would have been defensively unarmed and probably not combat ready. The first armed variant was the B-36B which was first delivered in 1948 putting it one year behind the best time estimates for the extended war with the Invasion of Japan that would have ended in 1947. It would have been great for a heated Cold War scenario, though. Just as a side-note, the four jet engines were added on the B-36D. The Peacemaker was so large because it was the first true inter-continental bomber having been designed to fly operations from Greenland to make bombing runs over Hitler's Fortress Europa in early WWII. A truly comprehensive model of this plane for the game would need to have the F-84 FICON and the XF-85 Goblin parasite fighters. The bombload would be impressive enough with 86,000lbs and the capability of carrying the T-12 gravity bomb or various nuclear or thermo-necular bombs. By all means go for it...

Here's a video of the B-36:

Finally, someone is interested in the B-36. This plane would be great to fly (and shoot down) over Korea. But I remember hearing from somewhere that the IL2 game engine can only handle a maximum of eight engines. So that rules out the late models. Cry The transport version http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convair_XC-99, the swept wing all jet version http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convair_YB-60, and it's little friends http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XF-85_Goblin would be nice additions.
