Geoffrey Wellum's Spitfire - Kristorf - 17.10.2009

I was asked some time back to do the Battle of Britain Flights Spitfire MkIIa in its new colours, that of Flt Lt Geoffrey Wellum DFC and I forgot all about it.

Reading this months Flypast I saw a pic and it jogged the old memory

Ended up doing one 'as new' and a war weary version.

I know the 'QJ' on the port side is stretched at the base, but no matter how hard I try I cannot get it straight (stretching point on model)

Will release as soon as I do unmarked versions

Really quite beautiful. You really have captured the colours well Wink Any future 92 squadron skins? hint hint Wink

I always thought that the Seafire model should be used to make a new Spitfire Mk I 3d model. It doesn't suffer from stretching the skin bitmap over the wire frame. You can make the codes as they should be without warping. I wonder if any Modder out there would be willing to give this a try?

great work Kristorf! Can't wait to download it....just read Wellum's book "first light" : a wonderful book about the life as a fighter pilot during the battle of Britain.

Cheers,

Eckhart

Kris, is there any historical evidence to show that wellum had the gas-diamond on his spit? Wink

It would indeed look better, however as we don't have it we make do

This is what it would look like on a Seafire body

Brilliant work, Chris! Thank you!

PS: I'm not sure about the yellow diamond either.

Cheers Reflected.

The 'gas mark' was placed on RAF aircraft at the start of the war.
It was a chemical paint that would change colour when it came into contact with noxious fumes.

As for the one on this, I have copied the finished aircraft as painted by the RAF as part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, and who am I to question the experts?

Welll.....Big Grin I'm going to look into this one, not because I don't trust you, but because the RAF don't always get it right Wink I heard they just gave one of the sole surving mark 1 hurricanes to india! Big Grin LOL

More info the better, however, I have photo's of 'Sailor' Malen's Spit MkI with a gas patch as well

Oh yeah, and some of the spits in 602 county of glasgow squadron had them as well. Not all spits had them though, I wonder why? Wink

Defence cuts, you know how much those paints cost????

- Salty54 - 17.10.2009

Kristorf,

Yes, I have used the Seafire to make some 610 Squadron skins. I have always liked the large roundel and large WD codes that characterize the early Spitfires of that squadron during the BoB. I tried with the current model but it is impossible to get correct due to the warping. Perhaps I just haven't the patience to do it.
