Your IL-2 stories: "I remember that time when..." - Serpiko - 14.11.2010
I'm sure everyone of us, in all these years playing IL-2, has experienced at least one "adventure" he particularly enjoyed and would like to tell about: an epic battle, a homecoming against all odds, a fair duel, a weird situation, an episode of good/bad luck... So, why not to tell it?
Don't get me wrong: this thread is not intended for "I've scored 247 kills in a sortie" stuff. Nobody is interested in reading someone's boasting. But, if you think you can
tell a nice story, this is the place!
So, what happened to you "that time"?

This one time at band camp, i took a P-38L late w/ 100% fuel + bombs & rockets in the old AAA server. Flew up to 15,000ft and attempted to high level bomb. I missed. badly.
So i dropped down to 1000ft and made repeated rocket attacks which i guess they didn't appreciate, because an I-185m-71 attacked and sent my #2 engine into shooting off into oblivion and started a fire in my #1 engine. He then flew into some invisible trees & rage quit the server.
I said to myself, "self, go home". So i began to nurse this p-38 with a raging fire in one engine and the other engine laying somewhere on the runway at the enemy base, I managed to take her home with combat flaps and a constant speed of no more than 135mph.
I finally make it to my base, deploy my flaps and thats when it hits me. I was flying the whole time with my airbrake extended, which i hadn't retracted after the last rocket run. So i re-extended it, landed, got my 800 points, and tried again.

I remember when was flying a B-17 in a mass bombing raid over Orléans in a mission I built, when just before we reached our target I was hit by flack knocking out 2 of my engines. I dived down to a lower attuided ready to fly back to our English base and to my horror turned into 24 low flying Bf 110 that were following the armada of B-17 (We also had
no fighter escort)
Nearly all the Bf 110 turned and went in for the kill on ME. After fighting them off for nearly 10 minuets, to my amazement the Bf 110 turned away
hock: Me and my crew manage to shoot down 5 of the Bf 110s and heavily damaged another 2, but not with casualties of our own... My rear machine gunner lay dead, as did both my dorcel gunners, my top machine gunner was heavily wounded and out of ammo, co-pilot dead, ball turret gunner dead. front machine gunner wounded, navigator heavily wounded. Pilot heavily wounded.
Plane damage: right aileron blown off, Rudder gone, flaps jammed, left gear down (hydraulics Mod at SAS) No.1 engine on fire but still going, No.2 engine dead, No.3 smoking heavily engine but still going , No.4 engine blown off. Bullet holes everywhere. Cannon holes everywhere too.
I dropped the plane down to about 100m before crashing somewhere in France, before being takes as Prisoner Of War. And as for the raid... before I quite I waited to my fellow B-17 to fly over they did, under heavy flack fire and the Bf 110 that diddn't case me, oh an were only a handful lest as well
All true, No lies.

As for the memory of the BoB's 70th anniversary, I created a mission for some RAF fighters, based at Hawkinge.
It's a MDS mission, thus it allows re-entry and the choice of different A/C's like SpitMk.I & II, Hurricane IIA & IIb, Beaufighter Mk.I.
The attackers comprise of the following: all enemy planes spawn the same time from different French aerodromes , Bf-110's lead the
charge with direct JaBo attacks on the base, followed by Stukas w/escort, attacking Chain Home Installations nearby.
The Stukas' 109 escort comprised of 8 fighters, which were to be divided into two groups of four, one group sticking with the Stukas,
the other flying to Hawkinge, to keep us busy.
No problem so far - a bit hectic, but hey!
As for the heavies, I had two flights of He-111's scheduled for London, escorted by two flights of Emils, all of them at Halle 40 (4000m).
How could I have known, the 8 bombers would cross overhead, unobstructed, while we were busy fighting off the 110's and 109's with two
Hurris and a Spit, when all of a sudden the 111's escorts would dive down own us from 4.000 meters! Eight Me-109E's diving down at you
from up there! They ate us alive...and forget about respawning...that was an experience of total enemy local air-superiority!
One of our relentless chaps tried to get off base again and again, only to be shot down over and over and me and my bad mouth kept on laughing...
But fun nevertheless!
As for a solution I added two flights of AI to aid us humans. The mission is still hard, but now you're a sitting duck with a chance!

My best online "duel" took place in the skies of Lybia, on UK_dedicated_3 server (no external views). Sadly, I can't remember my opponent's name.
That day there were few people on the server, so I was patrolling the coast alone, in my Bf-109F4.
When i reached the delta of the river I headed south, at about 3000m, hoping to jump some unaware low-flying fighterbombers. Instead I spotted a lonely fighter approaching from my 1 o'clock, at about the same altitude; as we got closer, the silouhette revealed it as a Spitfire.
I took a quick glance all around, and didn't see anybody else nearby. This was going to be a dear old one-on-one. The way I like it! 8)
We flew past each other at high speed, none of us scoring hits in the first pass, the Spit banking immediately to turn after me. And I started turning after him, too, performing a moderate high yo-yo: my fuel level was only 40%, and I wanted him to lose airspeed while trying to catch my tail, then I would have taken advantage of superior climb rate.
Instead, to my surprise, we completed the turn simultaneously, meeting head-on again. Then again. We kept on turning tight, taking the chance for a snap shot every time we passed by, but none of us had caused significant damages so far.
At the 4th or 5th pass, luck turned to my side. I managed to pull enough lead before shooting, and saw impacts on the nose of the Spit. Thick black smoke started pouring from its exhausts, but he refused to go down, and continued playing our turning game. We made a few more passes without further results.
Then his engine begun to feel my shots, as he was no longer able to keep following my high yo-yos, and started spiraling down slightly. So I looped and dove after him, already tasting the kill. This is where I made my mistake.
As I was coming in fast, he still had enough power to try and evade my attack. I expected him to stall so, instead of boom'n'zooming, I foolishly attempted to follow his maneuver. But he wasn't done yet. Just when I was about to fire, he thightened his turn so hard that he went over my head, then inverted and came down on me with all guns blazing. I was hit from spinner to rudder! :OO My canopy became swiss cheese, crosshair and gauges exploded, sight tinted red with blood, and dark oil filled my windshield. Now I was trailing dense smoke too.
My engine squeaked and sputtered, crying its pain, but it wasn't dead yet. I still had control, but my wounded pilot was now unable to fight. Could I make it back over friendly territory? I looked back: no way... the smoking Spit was there, completing the turn to come back and finish me off. As I stared at it coming from my 4 o'clock, aligning for the shot, I knew I was doomed.
But, hey... his propeller! It was slowing down, his engine had just stopped running! I still had a chance!
In a desperate last struggle I opened full throttle, asking for every remaining HP from my agonizing Daimler-Benz, while hanging to the stick to break as tight as my wounds would allow. Come on, PULL ME OUT! At the same time the Spit opened fire. He emptied his guns after me, trying to follow my turn as long as possible before stalling. A torrent of tracers zipped past my tail, frighteningly close. Had my plane been 1 meter longer, I would have been torn apart.
But it worked. Finally the bullets stream ended, and the Spit stalled. I saw him entering a spin, recovering, and then gliding back towards his base. It was over.
I had no intention to follow him. My plane had already given me everything it could. In fact, I barely managed to reach Axis lines before my engine died. While I was gliding down, shortly before belly landing, I was credited the kill. But I knew that only meant I had remained in the air one minute longer than my opponent.
Actually, I consider that a draw. And, man, I wish every draw was so thrilling!

Mine's not quite as intresting as yours, but here goes,
I was on an escort mission with a set of B-17Gs heading for Germany, i noticed a small glint of light to my left and ordered my men to stay with the bombers while i went to investigate. To my suprise i had stumbled upon a flight of 109s who had been trailing us for some time, i opened the throttle of my P-47D and dove hard into thier formation. My wingman had kept with me knocking out a 109 in the first pass, we pull up, circled, and came again.
The 109s dispersed into two sets, by this time i had called the second element of my flight to join in our game. A 109 rolled to my tail and began shooting me from 800 out, I jammed the flight stick into my gut climbing over, rolled out, and dove. The 109 kept pace however, so I dove a bit more hopping to outrun him. To my suprise I saw my wingman lining him up, saw his guns flash red, and saw the 109 barrle to the ground. (Our fight brought us to about 2000m now.) Then I saw another plane going down, it was a Jug, my eyes flash red with anger as my wing hunted for the last of the 109s.
I stumbled upon him below the clouds about 1500m he jinked hard right avoiding my first burst. I pulled up and rolled over, dove again, peppering him with all i had. This 109 popped his canopy and bailed, i cursed in spite of myself, and climbed back up to RTB.
(this was my favorite story so far
)

Too much caffeine to write a long story but I miss the times when we got 10 guys of our squadron and a few others to make a formation of stukas.
We got 2 hurricanes approaching us so I told others to continue to targets, I pulled up and shot the other hurricane.
The other one got hit by a tailgunner of my friend and it lost power. He tried to pull over for another attack, but a few shots took him down.
Too bad the heavy AA fire got almost all of our planes so they had to crash land in the canyons.

The first online aerial victory should be in everyone's mind. Mine wasn't easy as I recall. Back then I preferred the Yak3 and I was fighting a squad mate in his 190 (or was it a 109?). A lucky shot a little from below must have hit the oil tank.
A game we played to hone the low level low speed fighting, we flew low and slow, trying to stay behind the other in a mock dogfight.

i have a hilarious story involving a B-17, a P-38, water, and laws of physics... but i'll just have to show you instead, i'll upload that when i get a new video card so i can run both FRAPS and game smoothly

I remember the first time I played Il-2 online with a joystick, it was on the RCAF Hawaii map. I was in an Fw-190a and my first kill was an IL-2 Sturmovik. I was pretty happy w how it turned out.

I havent had many il2 close calls etc since i am hardly good at flying and i use everything set on easy but there was one time...
I was in a zero i had just got a joystick a few hours earlier, i flew into a group of other zero's.
I was exstremly bored and i had never used a joystick before so i decided to test myself by shooting down the other zero's...the first shot i shot down the zero and the 5 after it exsactly the same, all went down.

Recently I was playing through the BF-109's DCG for Crimea 1941. I was following the flight leader deep into enemy territory with our group of 6 fighters. I think we were on our way to destroy a flight of bombers when we ran into their escort. I remember watching my FL dive into the fray with his guns blazing when he ran head on into a mig 3. I was in a state of shock and vowed to avenge his death. We were able to complete wipe out the escort but we were only to able to shoot down a few of the bombers before we all ran out of ammo from the combined fights.

Fellow pilot parachuted onto a carrier on a bailout. I thought that was pretty cool
