Re: South Vietnam WIP - Mission_bug - 29.04.2011

Hello all, just a small update to show what has been going on lately.

I've now finished the small road network I intended and added these to the ed maps.

Diagrams and maps I have of the area vary in how they portray the passage of some of
these roads so I've done what I could to place them. This is especially difficult in the
highlands as it is difficult with the map tools to get a good flat surface for the roads, and
equally difficult to to make something that could be realistically usable when climbing up
into the highlands and comming down through another route. In reality passes or tunnels
would probably have been blown through some hills and areas carved into hill sides to get
road and rail to the intended spot. Il-2's tools do not allow such subtly so I've had to take
the best course possible.

Between Dalat and the road to Buon Ma Thuot.

The ed maps in the Sepia tone. Most of the titles are now Black. The paler colour is rail.

The ed maps in colour. Roads are Red, rail Black. I have not used seperate colours
for highways or country roads they all appear as Black

In most instances road and rail run together so it is not easy to destinguish them in some
places unless you zoom in. I'm still trying to find a colour combination that I like for the
coloured ed map.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. Big Grin

Just a few more images of the ongoing work.

The rail ascent to Dalat in the highlands.

Near to Dalat.

The new ed map showing the new roads added outside of Saigon.

And finally a new texture being trialed. This is to try and simulate the red soil
everyone tells me is such a part of Nam, only in a few places at the moment.

Re: South Vietnam WIP - Mission_bug - 01.05.2011

A few further images of the contiuing work.

The infamous highway 19 has now been added from the coast passing
through An Khe and Pleiku.

This is the place where GM 100 a French military unit was virtually wiped
out in 1954. During the american involvement of the Sixties it was the
main supply route to Pleiku.

And a airfield at Pleiku.

And An Khe.

The airfields are very basic in layout as I'm not entirely sure they were there
during the Fifties but were added after reading about the demise of GM 100
as mention was made of an air evacuation of the population from An Khe
to Pleiku.
Addmitedly this may have been by helicopter as the French had that capability
but I use any thread of info to allow me to place an airfield, no matter how feeble it may be.

During the American involvement An Khe was a helicopter base although
C-130s visited and Pleiku I believe was the home of Spads and Spookys.

The airfields have been made deliberatly basic to represent provincial
airfields during the Fifties but I'm sure the FMB will provide enough
objects for those interested in the US period to populate the areas to
their hearts content.

Re: South Vietnam WIP - Mission_bug - 31.07.2011

Hello all, here is a further update for my South Vietnam map WIP, nothing new on the map I'm afraid apart from the details in the above post but the size of the files has been drastically reduced to make the map less resource hungry.

http://www.4shared.com/file/nN5x515t/So ... updat.html

A huge file has been removed that wasn't necessary and files in both the map folder and the texture folder have now been indexed. The map folder has been reduced from 121 MB down to 37.7MB and the texture folder from 26.5MB down to 10MB.

Anyone who uses this to overwrite the previous files will need to remove the Mymap_c.tga file, around 50MB from their existing map folder.

May I say thank you very much to UP~Boomer who made this possible by advising on the necessary changes.

Missions for QuickQMBPro, only tested in Dark Blue World.

Re: South Vietnam WIP - Dixiecapt - 09.09.2011

Mission Bug,

Fantastic map! I want to make a Urban Warfare CAS USMC Campaign for UP3.0 based on Hue City and Tet. Please see my Private Message about what I've done already and what you think. Thanks, and Thanks for bringing Vietnam to IL-2.

Dixiecapt.

Re: South Vietnam WIP - Mission_bug - 10.09.2011

Hello Dixiecapt, glad your enjoying the map. I seem to have stalled as far as developing the map goes at the moment, the images you sent me of the work you've done at Hue really do look superb, pics for the thread please so everyone can appreciate the work you have undertaken.
As far as anyone else developing the map to accomadate the US involvement of the Sixties I've always been more than happy for that to happen, all I ask is that those that do acknowledge that it is a development of my original map and that they release it under their own name. That way those that want to keep my map as is for the colonial period can.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. Big Grin

Re: South Vietnam WIP - Dixiecapt - 10.09.2011

GOtcha, then I will Release what I did for Hue City with the Campaign for such, and Rename the map with all credit towards you. Thanks for that.
