Here's what I use as a loading screen.
Just convert to TGA as instructed earlier if you want it.

The load screen (from "files\gui") is this:
a 1024x768 TGA file
When loading is looking like this:
and the Background from menus is a complete black TGA file... so it's looking like this:
I thought... I shouldn't go too far from the game after all. So... how about the box cover?
Where do you put the black one for menus..?
BTW godverdoom just convert the jpeg to a 512x512 TGS file using photoshop or something similar. The drop it into your missions folder.. I don't know how to set up the loading screen or the menu screen... but the mission screen TGA can be changed from the missions file.

Simplest way I know of (as stated above)
Backup the "background.tga" (ie. copy into a folder named "-backup"
open "background.tga" in your graphics editor
Copy your new .jpg, .bmp or whatever and paste it over the "background.tga" merge/flatten and save.
Gimp, PSP or Photoshop should all handle this OK.

I cant say for other programs but in PS you can convert a file to just about anything simply by using the Save As command.... that will also preserve your original.
