Cool, thanx.
Shooting things up IS fun
Cheers, Neil

I tried the new wrapper.dll but it isn't creating the mods folder (I'll ask elsewhere about that problem), so I just have the "old" files\com\maddox\il2\objects. I assume I can swap your ships.ini & static.ini for the ones in there, correct?
Just create the mods folder yourself.

Thanks urufu,
I'm reading up on Phillips instruction for setting up the files for the wrapper, but didn't want to set up the new folder if I wasn't going to use the wrapper system for the mods for a while.

yes

I like to use this little mission to test the destruction of the trees...and convoys and trains
"1traintest2.mis.rar"
here...as usual

This is gr8t stuff! On the engine, however, I resp. disagree. Guncams from P-47s and P-51s routinely display 50 cal MGs making sieves out of locomotives. They don't explode, like you say, but they are certaintly punctured and rendered useless. 1/2" steel is nothing to a Browning 50 cal HMG.
- fabianfred - 19.01.2008
obviously things need tweaking....and anyone can do it with the basic files and info I've given
I would expect a locomotive to be a 'little' stronger than a carriage....in the default setting they are all the same...
...this is what we need....for people to try the mod as it is now....and suggest improvements
this item needs to be a little stronger...or that to be weaker....

I would certainly love to see a steam locomotive belch steam when it gets peppered and then see the train slow.
hock: 8) Also wagons are too easy to destroy. They should start to burn and turn black. Both loc and wagons should take more effort to destroy.

It would be great if there could be a variation in afects according to what you hit. Watching videos of strafing P-47s you can see certain buildings end vehicles explode spectacularly, where as others simply show smoke.
Is it possible to use certain fire and explosion effects from the aircraft on certain objects and vehicles?
- Bee - 19.01.2008
Secondary explosions would be very nice...
- fabianfred - 19.01.2008
looking at this example taken from the technics.ini file........ you can see that the wagon1.....which is the ammo truck has a secondary explosion....(explode= wagonwoodexplosives).....whilst the second wagon is ordinary and doesn't....... the Panzerbodyfront setting is the relative destruction hardness

so we may be able to alter a few things....but to have steam gushing out is probably beyond me

I added my "Destruction_effects" folder to my download site....just in case you do not have it installed
I cannot remember whose it was...but it gives better fire and smoke when tanks and vehicles are destroyed....I think to the ship AA guns too
- fabianfred - 20.01.2008
just added updated 'technics.ini and static.ini' to my site....called "objects.rar"
just replace the old ones...... and the destruction_effects.rar goes in the MODS folder

Definitely, although one shouldn't underestimate the durability of underlying structure on most railcars (especially heavy freight cars), most engines were indeed built like tanks.
spud Wrote:Half an inch isn't that thick. I have many .30 cal rifles, and I've put holes in 1/2 inch plate with AP rounds. A .50 cal BMG API will easily penetrate 1/2" at a several hundred yards, IMO.
Here's a pic I found:
http://img59.exs.cx/img59/919/ap19az.jpg
Looks like .50 cal will penetrate over 1/2 an inch at 600 yards, a little shorter range if it's at an angle (not a problem with a cylindrical locomotive , some bulltes will almost always be normal tothe surface) )
tater
Tater, lets switch to metric:
According to the chart in the image you posted, at 600 yards, a .50 cal direct impact on a steel plate (uncurved and unstressed) will produce at most 16mm penetration. This rises to as much as 20mm at close range.
Typical boiler thickness (if you examine my post) is estimated at around 110-120mm. This means that the penetration of the Browning 0.5 is
five to six times too low to make it through the boiler (even at a 'perfect' impact angle).
