Open canopies - KiloGolfPapa - 30.10.2008

Just adding to the list.... and wanting to express my appreciation for the awesome work the mod crew does for the community. J8, Gladiator I and II would be v. cool with open canopies..... Just a thought.

- JudgeMingus - 30.10.2008

I think there were a few planes with sliding canopies that still could not fly with them open because either -
1. the open cockpit created turbulence and disrupted airflow over the rear of the plane,
2. the low pressure zone created behind the windscreen drew exhaust gases into the cockpit.

Both of these effects would be more pronounced at high speed, but could be problematic even at takeoff/approach speeds.

Planes subject to these effects (such as the FW-190) would have to have separate modelling of "pit open" effects.

The Focke Wulf was not flown with the canopy open. You will not see any shots of the aircraft configured that way in flight.

In fact, I cant immediately think of any of the German fighters which were flown with canopies open.

109? - Freiwillige - 31.10.2008

The 109 would be a joke with an open canopy since the drag it would create would make flying the plane difficult at best. Also closing it would be just about impossable! But I do agree the the P-40's need it as well as p-51's all makes, Buffalo/F2A, Hurricane's, spits, and countless others could use this cool effect.

Yea, the P-47, P-51, P-40, P-36, Ki-84, etc would be swell!

The canopy would probably break off because of the wind anyway.

hmm old thread

What I wanted open canopy's for in German Fighters is more for on the ground,
just for the visual of it if anything, screenshots and movie and such

- MR_G - 01.11.2008

Would probably be too much work, but it would add to the game if all canopies opened upon engine shutdown. Likewise, canopies on aircraft on the ground would be open before engine start up, and close when you fire up the engine.

duffys tavern Wrote:Phas3e, did I understand you say, some of the Spitfire canopys now open? Would love to see the P-40s. Someone has it stay open but not slide. Be nice to have the TBF, B5N, B6N, P-47, P-51, Hurricane, etc.

btw TBF and next dont have pit

MrJolly said some time back, that when he gets time, he would look into exchanging the B239 (Buffalo) pit that is presently in the TBF with the F2A-2 pit, which does have a functioning canopy.

Maybe the TBF/TBM cockpit/canopy issues could be addressed when/if this ever takes place viewtopic.php?t=9341
