try to put the files (2*tga +mat) to 3do/Cockpit/GladiatorMkI, it worked for me with J8A

do you need to place a line into the files.txt folder for these to work?

No. You do not need to do anything to the files.txt file if you are using the new wrapper system. If you aren't using the new wrapper you really need to by now.

Like vpmedia said, just create a GladiatorMkI folder in Mods/reticles(or whatever you named the reticle mod)/3do/Cockpit/ and copy the new tga and mat reticle files from one of the other planes into this new Gladiator folder.

It should work.

I'm currently using the gladiator MK1 & II downloads from MrJolly.
The cleaned up gunsight does not seem to work for it that way.
have to do some more digging

You're right. Forget the Gladiator cockpits. They will not work because unfortunately the Gladiators still use the J8A cockpit. Any reticle changes made in the J8A will show up in the Gladiators.
