hey im the new (one of the new) guys on the block. wood planes.....i have to many to speak of.
i am building an F4u-1a. Its the topflite .60 size GE but i have sacled it to true 1/7 scale. includeing working cowl flaps, owrking scale flaps, all moving surfaces are covered as on the real thing. working gear and gear doors as well as the tail gear and its doors. it also has a working tail hook. lights and scale cockpit will go in it. i dont yet have pics ( never wanted/needed to take them) but i will get some a post them for you to see.

i also look forward to seeing it, i will eventually get some work done on my hurricane, in the meanwhile here is a snap of my latest aircraft, i test flew it the other day and its had 5 flights since, i have had a few small problems but nothing major. anyway the plane is 56inch span with a pair of 5cc four strokes for power, sounds great now they are running propperly!

This is the bird about a month ago, I need to get some new pics. I have installed the scale flaps as well as the scale nose by cutting the nose down, sanding, sanding and more sanding of the nose. The tail wheal and tail hook spot and bluckhead has been cut and put in. The fuse is completely covered in 3/32 balsa then I have about a week of sanding with 220 all the way down to 1000 grit sand paper and will be covering it in silk fabric......then more sanding
....if you have never built a model like this get ready for a llllllllllllllllloooooooottttt of sanding. In order to get a good finish you need to sand a lot. I want a marine corps finish. It will all be airbrushed and I will soon have my scale 8 cylinder radial robart engine to put into it. The tails have been put on and scaled up. I am about to ad the rail for the moving canopy. If you cant tell love the f4u, the only problem is that I have an F4u about 10mins away from me at the National Muesum of Naval Aviation on board NAS pensacola. I have access to the aircraft pups and blueprints. So this project so far has cost 5 grand in just the aircraft and building material. I have the brand new JR 14 channel radio 2.4MHZ that I got over in Japan. I am unintentionally useing every channel on the radio also, LOL.
The last pic up is my trainer with Evolution .60 on it. If you are new to R/C GET AN EVOLUTION until you learn how the engines work and how to properly break one in. Evolution engines dont need to be broke in, they do it at the manufacturer for you and they are very powerful. I LOVE my Evo. In fact the engine on my trainer was bought 30mins before I went flying, installed it in the aircraft on the bed of my truck, started it, got the mixture and ideal set up, refueled the aircraft, started it back up, taxied and took off. Thats was all done in the mater of about 15-20 mins with an engine right out of the box. I HIGHLY recommend these engines.

very nice work on the F4u, and i agree, sanding is the name of the game with scale models. as for your comments on evolution engines i must disagree, i have used 2 and they have both been awful, impossible to set up and very unreliable, in 18 years of modeling i have never come across engines so frustrating, they should work but they dont. in the end we took off all the easy adjustment bits and ran them super rich for a bit then tried to lean them off, then we got somewhere but they were still hopelessly unreliable. also they are two stroke, gimme a fourstroke any day!

WOW i have never heard of anyone having bad luck with Evo engines. My buddy has about 10 aircraft with all evo engines on them in fact he has a scale b-25 that he uses two evo .90 engines on installed them right out of the box and went flying the next day. But yes give me a four stroke anyday, more powerful and real sounding. well im off to work on the F4u.

actually 2 stroke engines are more powerful than 4 stroke, but they are very (cough cough) smokey

what i ment by more powerfull is being able to swing a bigger prop for a more scale like look. i have about...well to many hours to count its more or less 3 years, do to a new baby boy in the family. he's one now and i can get back to working on my models.

well here are some updated shots of my F4u-1a.
i need to add a little peace of planking to the wing before i cover it. but yes the outer part of the wing is not going to planked with balsa as the real one was not planted with sheet metal but instead covered with muska (slik/cotton).
I am about to check the fit of the tail wheal and hook. I also still need to put the oil coolers on. Then all i have to do is about a week of sanding plus a few little tweaks here and there should take more than about a month to finish her.

this is always an area of confusion, in theory Gk you are right, 2 strokes are more powerful, higher rpm and firing on every stroke. problem is they are not very good on torque and from a scale model point of view they are noisy, smokey and usually have massive exhast systems to somehow try and hide. so four strokes are my preference, lower noise, more useable power with the higher torque and they sound great, especially 2 of them humming away together! as a result i only have 1 two stroke model now and dot plan to buy any more 2 strokes. when done my hurricane will have a 20cc laser 120 fourstroke up front, these are the best model engines you can get and i love em!

Several years ago I used to make handmade solid wood models out of Basswood. The pics are a small sample of the hundreds that i made, as well as several for the local Air Museum in Quonset, RI, USA. I also made some things for my son (Star Wars) for his toys.
The pic in the middle of 4 aircraft on stands are actually very tiny. 3 inch wingspans and moving props hehe.
