Try to replicate this within the game:
- Fly! - 02.11.2008
The CFS /FS series got it much better in this respect. There the planes have perceivable mass that you can feel and respond to gravity when landing. IL2 planes have always floated like wind-driven balloons.

good example zorin.Just try to land at flat ground in N1k2-Ja and for expample FW190 or Bf109 or ki61 you will see the difference.Im not saying that landing on ground should be easy but this model what we have now SUCKS in my opinion.Planes bumps too much and doesnt matter where you landing on beach or grass.

caldrail Wrote:Again, I agree wholesale. However WW2 aircraft regularly came to grief in taxiing accidents and sometimes still do. In recent years I remember a hurricane digging its nose in after running into a rut. These aircraft balance on their mainwheels (unless they have tricycle undercarriage) and that requires a relatively flat surface. They can use roughish ground (I remember practising a landing on a field in New Zealand that resembled the Somme in 1917) but they aren't all-terrain-vehicles.
Absolutely.. This, if it was a mod, although needed, will probably be difficult to impliment..
I understand the problem, I've taken off from grass strips too.. but its always narked me that we can't do something similar in game.
For real, if a pilot has to make an emergency landing, has to make a judgement call on where he will put down, and although I've practiced this and landed without power on properly prepared strips, touch wood.. I haven't had to do it for real yet..lol! (touching wood again)..

Well, in my opinion it feels like having no suspension at al in Il-2.
Okay, if you push full throttle and then to 0% then to 110% and so on you see the plane do a little move left and right, but it never feels like a suspension.

Yep, us glider pilots have to go through the 5 S's before selecting a field to land in.
Size (sufficient to touch down and stop in)
Slope (Try not to land anywhere with visible slope and if you must then land uphill)
Surface (Grass should be no higher than roughly 1 foot, no visible ricks, ruts etc)
Stock (If theres cattle or livestock, choose another landing field)
Surroundings (Watch out for wires, tall trees etc)
My very first real emergency (thanks to an impromptu hailstorm) had me land at a (now abandoned) domestic airport. Awww yeah 8)
It would be fantastic if in game we could have different effects for different surfaces i.e. smooth grass is OK, rough grass has you bouncing around, long grass grabs your wing and ground loops, soft sand bites your wheels and flips you upside down etc.

Be warned - some WW2 aeroplanes float readily. The spitfire for instance, even at 60mph, produces considerable lift at ground level and can catch out the unwary on landing. You might want to check your airspeed when landing. Any excess speed will result in a float on ground effect for some distance and in that respect IL2 is very realistic. I know that to my cost, after embarrasing myself on a short field at Ardmore, not to mention frightening the instructor somewhat.

A Bulgarian Bf 109 launching against US bomber raids, winter/spring 1944... try to replicate
that (not to mention a l
anding on such a muddy field) in Il-2, and you're
dead. One of the things I don't like about the sim (while honestly, despite its faults, its a masterpiece) is they way planes land on grass fields. Sure, it was hard, but some time landing with speeds below 150km/h and on three wheels results with my plane jumping up some 20 metres and crashing down... and I don't think that should happen in real life.
- caldrail - 03.11.2008
Yes, that might be a tad unreal - but you seriously wouldn't think so strapped inside your plane when it bucks on rough ground in real life. Even when I used a grass taxiway at Thruxton, England, you could feel the aeroplane bounce about gently. The suspension has to cope with some serious forces and its never as compliant as a luxury saloon.

Me too, and I even don’t need a landing gear for that
I usually do it on the belly even on the airfields, it’s safer that way. And ground crew can always replace wheels or propeller blades or . . .
Actually every time on landing in IL2 I have a feel like my plane are riding on the balloon and bouncing around. Its fun, but I don’t think it’s very realistic.

I believe you are talking about ground effect. I do not believe this is modelled in game at all.
- caldrail - 04.11.2008
I would say it does. Land at too high a speed and you float down the runway just like real life. Flight models in simulations are always a bit subjective, and as a former pilot, I 've had many things to say about them. MFS for instance is
not "As Real As It Gets". The great thing about IL2 is that whilst it tends toward to arcade end of flight models it does actually give you a modicum of reality, and achieves the difficult end of giving you the sensation that you're handling a balls out state-of-the-art 40's aeroplane. That in my view is a tremendous success, whatever gripes you might have about the FM. In any case, many people want changes to suit their skill level or preferences. The reality would suprise them.
Thats why I speak against some mod ideas. Its certainly not that I want to spoil peoples fun (No, way, the whole point is to enjoy the game). With this suspension mod, it takes away the realism of how hard and resilient aircraft undercarriages are. Aircraft (especially in this period)
do bounce back into the air if you come down hard, or collapse entirely if you arrive that little bit harder. You really do need to fly it well, not rely on technology to solve it for you. Further, a soft suspension will inevitably have a longer travel, which greatly increases the risk of a propellor strike. That won't just bend your propellor, it'll wreck your engine too.
- Guest - 04.11.2008
so you want to say that N1k2-Ja have unrealistic suspension??its not easy to land in it anyway but in my opinion this is IT!!! whis model should be use in all planes.
Heheh good one Avala.
- Brophmeister - 04.11.2008
Hmmm, you may be right Caldrail but I think that the failure of the aircraft to settle at high speed is more due to the inertia of the aircraft than ground effect (OK, so it gives a pretty good simulation of the effect I guess). But anyway, were probably just nitpicking irrelevant curiosities here.
And youre spot on about FS. Ever seen an Extra 300 do a spin in real life? Yes? OK, now try doing it in Flight "Simulator"....
