Part of the visual "squiggle" of tracer is the residue of the burning (phosphorous?) in the path of the bullet WHICH IS A SPIRAL, and if you ask a physicist (please do) the forces created by being fired from an aircraft flying at in excess of 200 knts (which is the velocity the bullet starts at before it is fired) in some amount of wind from any given direction will affect the path of the bullet.
Hence the complications of deflection shooting.
Besides this is a game and a pastime, and it's enquiring minds like nuk3ms and thoughts like this that have made AAA. Let him go.
As the tired old adage goes..."If you don't like the product, don't use it".

I'm grumpy today

The complication of deflection shooting is from the fact that you are trying to shoot a moving target from a moving platform, not the medium in which the rounds travel.

Also, a bullet does not travel in a spiral, but in a straight line. The bullet itself is spinning about its own axis. Let me see if I can explain this better. The prop on the front (or rear) of the aircraft is spinning, while the aircraft is travelling in a straight line. While the propeller may be spinning about its center axis, it is also still travelling in a straight line, not a spiral. If the prop was travelling in a spiral, so too would the aircraft.

The gun cameras shot film. One of the drawbacks of film is that it requires a specific amount of light exposure time to produce an image. If the subject that you are filming moves faster than the time of exposure, you get trails. Like this:

And the spinning and squiggling effect you see on gun cam footage is just that, compounded by the fact that the world is moving violently around the camera (think relativity here) as the guns are fired, while in reality the tracers are moving in a relatively straight line.

amen! that should put an end to the squiggly tracers discussions that pops up from time to time.
I've fired thousands of rounds with the M2HB, and i have never seen a tracer doing a "spiral" when in flight..

Also (to the thread starter) Bullets without tracers also bounce off the ground if they strike the ground with a certain angle. Obviously you cant see those ricochets (sp?) because there's no tracer at the back of the bullet.

Is it possible for someone to look into adding the smoke contrails for the .303 and .50 ammounition as this is historically correct  Basically, the tracers would look like the mg 17s on lufteaffe planes etc...

Also, nuk3m, please could you post unedited screens as i find your photoshopped shot hard to see properly. They are fine as 'cool' shots; but when displaying a WIP MOD or to be used as an example I think unedited shot are so much easier to view  Thanks. Big Grin

I would be interested (to dowload) any tracer MOD to change the .303's and .50s to have the smoke lines... (BTW nuk3m-I love your pictures  when is you film coming out?)

I remember you posting the trailer in one of the effects posts on here. It looked really cool

BTW-are you a modder or were you just requesting a tracer mod?

I wasn't requesting nothing i was just asking i it would be possible the thing that i've said...

Check the WIP BETA mods section. There's a tracer mod there

yeah i've saw them but are awfull

The only reason they should appear as wobbly lines - for both the tracer itself and the smoke trail - is if the viewpoint (guncam, external camera, whatever) is shaking a lot. From a still or relatively motionless viewpoint, the only thing you'll see is the arc as the round is pulled down by gravity or its change in direction if it ricochets or is blown off-course. Bullets spin, but you're not going to see a visibly gyrating trail of either tracer or smoke because the whole reason they spin is to make them fly straight.

This is why I've never installed any of the wobbly smoke trail mods... the only time they make much sense is if you're recording a movie and you then apply a gratituous amount of screen shake.

Now if someone made a mod in which your whole AC shuddered while firing its guns, and the tracers appeared as squiggly from inside but straight from outside... THAT would make sense. As far as I know though, it may not even be possible.

That's why I myself would like to see a separate tracer and smoke mod for just such a purpose; recreation of guncam footage. Smile

Anyhow in my movie i did add the zig zag tracers but because the camera was shaking i mean it a scene were it moves fast
