Same, I have a new LinxSys router, which a friend forwarded using teamviewer, my question is, could an obsolete MODEM be causing the problems, if my antivirus, wirelessrouter, internet,
and everything else is fine,
Do i need to foward a modem as well as the router?

The best and by far easiest router to use for hosting is the Netgear WGR614.
Just type
www.routerlogin.net and enter the password u set it up with.
Then select port forwarding.
Click on add service and enter the name of the game u wish to use.
Then (and this is the easiest way to host IL21946 without any timeouts or issues) enter in the first box port 1. then in the second enter 65534.
Then just hit Save (or whatever box is below it i forget now) and voila!!! you are hosting no problems at all.
At least this is my experience.
I know that all advice i have read tells u that for the game all u need is port 22000
But from my experience opening just that port did not work, so i opened all of them and i had no issues at all.
As i say, this advice is just based on my own experience, but i did it and had trouble free hostimg with this great easy to use router.
