It is possible to save skins in IL2 format with GIMP: go to "Colors" menu and choose "Posterize". Set the posterize levels to 256 (max). Then go to "Colors" menu and choose "Mode" and "Indexed". Select "Generate optimum palette" and set Maximum number of colors to 256 (default). Set the Color dithering to one of the Floyd-Steinberg algorythms and click "Convert". You can then save your skin in BMP format compatible with IL2.

Or just use Bright.

While you can save skins in Il-2 format with Gimp, Photo Shop, and Paint Shop Pro, you will see much more color degradation saving them in indexed mode than by saving them in 32bit and then using Bright to convert them.

If you like, try it for yourself. It is especially noticeable when working with vibrant colors like bright reds, yellows and blues.

S!

Good day, everyone

I made this a Sticky Topic because GIMP is very useful to many people and we get a questions about it. Knowing how to get the image to the correct format is of course crucial.

This is a temporary Sticky Topic. I am considering the creation of a new topic for all GIMP issues with a simple quide in the first post. No promises, so we'll see.

Re: Gimp - Lefty Hartnett - 24.08.2010

I use only use Gimp--primarily because it is free and I am cheap---and so far it has been able to do everything that I have skills enough to try to do.

So, I for one would appreciate a Gimp section.

Just my two cents.

Best,
Lefty

Okay, well, I might merge this topic with a GIMP tutorial or something along the lines of a guide.

Re: Gimp - Lejo - 24.08.2010

Found a tutorial of how to skin with GIMP on YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZFLgtPa16w&feature=related

and an improved version of the first link:

I think tutorials are easier to understand than plain text.

Re: Gimp - psychobob - 24.08.2010

There is also a whole discussion board specifically dedicated to skinning with GIMP at Simmer's Paint Shop. I think they have tutorials there too. That's where I learned to skin with GIMP.
