From the way 1C Company is releasing DirectX 11 games and simulators, it seems that people will need at least a DirectX 11 generation system to run the awesome Battle of Britain.

I am certain about this, so you can look for any good DirectX 11 system now and be ready. You can run IL-2 in DirectX 10 with it, too.

Well, not at least.
You'd need at least DX9. But DX 11 would be recommended to make use of any new features Wink

With DX 9 and 10, it would not have the new 3D engine, such as changing weather conditions, including changing water. No moving trees and plants with the breeze and much of the effect on flight would be reduced, too.

DirectX 11 or nothing for the win!

Right, that's some clear words. But why hasn't this info been released officially, or did I miss something important?! Confusedhock:

A large portion of my scepticism stems from the fact, that so far no official sys req's have been released, AFAIK. :?:

Not true, all of this was present in the DX 9 version of SoW which was based on the Il-2 engine. Some of these details are in RoF too and you don't need DX 11 to see them. DX 10 might be a given, but I'm sure this can all be achieved in DX9; as all the videos posted have been in DX9 IIRC.

We have yet to see DX11 Wink

The information about the DirectX API features are found with the graphics card manufacturers and Microsoft. My opinion is that 1C likely desires that IL-2 users enjoy what they have without having to be distracted with too much concern about hardware at this time. They still make money on sales of the sim and that is good for the bottom line. I feel that it is all about the business strategy of timing.

There is also the closer relationship that 1C has now with NVIDIA and Microsoft in comparison with IL-2. The DirectX 11 API was stated by both NVIDIA and Microsoft as being much more closely tied to game developer contracts than in the past.

Translation: Game developers using DirectX 11 have minimum requirements in order to be allowed to use this new API. The reason is that the software and hardware developers invested much time, money, and boasting about this DirectX 11 and insist on developer agreements which use most of the new features to meet the higher expectations.

Philip.ed, my friend, I don't know where you saw Sow videos, but the ones that I saw had the changing weather and the moving water that can only be done in the DirectX 11 API with the latest graphics shaders and Alpha.

By the way, the Alpha version of the DirectX 11 API has been available to game developers for years. Idea

I see, make it proprieatory and you're good to go. :-? While I dislike the monopoly M$ has always tried to enforce on any game publishers,
by defining DX as a "sub-standard" per se, by means of force marketing, I can also see 1C/MG's reasons for going that way.

While IMO OpenGL has larger potential, choosing to follow the DX tracks means avoiding distractons and keeping the development process
somewhat streamlined. All right, let's have it coming. Smile

Still, Philip.ed.'s comments get me thinking... There's so many people out there, still using XP/DX9.0c. Wouldn't it be clever to leave a backdoor
open, program-wise, like Infinity Ward did with Call Of Duty 2? There you had the choice of playing the game in DX7 or DX9.
The first giving owners of older systems the chance to play game at all, the latter giving you the - back then - stunning graphics.

Philip.ed and you made all good comments which stand by themselves as reasonable.

However, timing in business is critically important.

Expectations are also crucial.

Think for a moment: Oleg Maddox promised for years that Storm of War will be State-of-the-Art, so to speak and also "excruciating attention to detail".

Obviously, we know that such expectations can only be met with the next generation of API.

All right, Chief! Big Grin I'll let it rest from here on, but I go with a lightened heart.

While I am an autodidact pessimist (that way nasty surprises come at you with much lower force   ), I'll bear with you,
your knowledge of facts "we, the people" don't know about and a comforting feeling of bad dreams turning good, eventually...[Image: 917.gif]

Many thanks for the info and your time, of course! S! Big Grin

You are welcome. Smile

Oleg has posted some videos, all in DX9.

Also, the version of SoW that was built on Il-2 had moving weather fronts; all in DX9. trust me, I'm a SoW nerd Wink

I'm still using XP, following my principle of buying M$ OS'es after SP1... Since the "ME reloaded debacle", I'd have to wait for Win7 SP1. :-?

I sincerely hope you're right and I can at least experience the physics of the A/C and the effects,
before I have to spend at least 1000 €urons on a new rig and OS, to let me enjoy the game in full bloom... Smile

Many thanks to you too, philip.ed.! Big Grin
