Nice! I'm glad that one is able to recreate the glass look and shadows. Makes the decision to scan the instruments without glass the right one, in retrospect. The glass on the US instruments is flat though, so a reflection would show a non-distorted part of the cockpit.
Too bad there is no cube-mapping for the cockpit, or the reflection could be made to change according to 6DOF view position and change with direction of sunlight and time of day/weather.
Didn't notice if SoW:BoB is going to.

I remember that I have read somewhere that it will be implemented in BoB, it is very easy effects for nowadays game’s engine.
In il2 there is no reflections or even shadows, everything as we see as it is, is painted.

a question... - keinmann - 08.12.2008
I've been pondering about the cockpits in this game lately... I've been wondering about the cockpits for what
used to be only AI flyables, that we can now fly with mods. Those aircraft use cockpits from other flyable aircraft, and it kind of spoils things, in a way. Especially when you fly something like a FW-200, and you're looking at the cockpit of an American bomber.
The question I have is this: What would it take to create all new and historically accurate cockpits for these planes? For instance, an accurate cockpit for a HS-129 or such? The information on how the cockpits looked is available, and we have some very skilled folks here. I know my way around a computer, but I really don't have experience modding IL2. I would even work on it myself if someone could get me headed in the right direction...

If it was a 10 minute job, I guess we would have brand new cockpits for everything here.. You have to bear in mind we only have a very limited amount of modders here and they have a full intray..
Making a new cockpit alone could take months and months.. in the fullness of time I'm sure eventualy it will get done, but there are so many projects running and active at the moment I wouldn't hold your breath..

Well said, and I totally understand that. Really, what I'm wondering is how tough of a task one could expect it to be. I'm positive that it won't be easy. Because, like you said, if it WAS easy, we would already have it. I know it would be a long term project. I've actually been looking for an experienced modder who can share a bit of knowledge with me and get me going. I'd really like to get into modding IL-2. I've always liked tinkering around with files, programs, and games. I'm certainly no pro, but I know my way around a computer. If anyone would be so kind as to work with me a bit, please pm me. I'd appreciate the hell out of it. This may even be something I could work on one day, once I learn the proper skills of course. I know these guys work their butts off to bring us all of these cool mods, and we are all very thankful for the hours upon hours of fun it has brought us. But, I also realize they have limited resources and man power. So, with that being said, I hope I can help out in some way, one day...

fair enough .... but little bit too early IMHO .
We have yet to see first brand new cockpit implemented in game fully operational. Its difficult to teach someone when you are in process of learning yourself . I believe Magpie is closest to finish with his B 29 pit so you could offer some help there or ask for info ...

Well, I've got that B29 cockpit now, and love it! What I'm saying though, is I want to learn the core of IL-2 modding basics from the experienced folks. I've done a few mods of my own, and have enjoyed it. Building a brand new cockpit is certainly NOT a task I would be able to undertake anytime soon. But I hope one day I can get that far. The way I see it, is the more people we get working on stuff like this, the more we will see the game expand, and the more fun it will bring to everyone. It would probably be beneficial for the community to actually have folks train new modders up and get them into the "workforce". The more heads and hands you have working on this stuff, the better...
But for now, I do humbly accept my position as a total n00b to IL-2 modding
lol. But, I do hope I can one day bring lots of enjoyable hours to the community through something I make!
