Of course one could do that, but this wouldn't really be "adding new countries" but "replacing existing countries", right?
I think, what Gaston is working at is to figure out how you can add a complete new set of files associated with a new nation without changing existing ones, including national markings. That would be very very nice, indeed, for you could include virtually every nation operating aircraft from 1930-1950 into the game, and even phantastic ones, like e.g. Scotland or Bavaria and stuff.
Well, I think I could contribute making some markings, but it's you that have to figure out how adding them would work, guys! I tried myself in a simple attempt to change the blue shade of the french roundel, but placing them into a PaintSchemes\decals\French folder inside MODS folder did not work, unfortunately. Placing them in "files" also did not bring any new progress. So: mission failed!
I got completely no idea how Il2 applies the "decals" to the planes when rendering. Probably, there is a strange-named file that manages all this. I think so because e.g. the roundels have different names for almost every nation. So, it's not like French roundel is called roundel.tga and German one is called roundel.tga, they have almost all different names.
If this is hard-coded, we can not do much. If not, there must be a file somewhere that tells the prog which roundel to pick for which country.
EDIT: Sorry, this was thought as a reply to the post before Gaston's last post. He posted at the same moment I did!

Anyway, I still do not know how to attach markings and numberings to planes...
I myself don't know where they are.... :roll:
Maybe someone here does? But then there's still the numbering problem... :?

Still not finding a solution for national markings and numbering... but I have been continuing to work on this mod. I now have :
-9 Canadian squadrons as an independent nation,
-1 Romanian squadron Allied (Red) sided for Romania post-8.1944.
In project :
-1 Vichy France squadron Axis (Blue) sided,
-1 Italian squadron Allied (Red) sided,
-1 Finnish squadron Allied (Red) sided.
I wish to upload the Nation and the Squadron mod in their actual condition, so you can also use them (a kind of test...), but do not know how and where to upload them... any idea ???

They made some progress in this, though i believe it is not directly portable to the 4.08/4.09 world it should still be useful to some degree. As I still did not find the solution about markings and insignas, I have continued to work on adding squadrons.
Now, we can fly Spain, Finland, Romania, France and Italy on both sides !!!
So, we can fly for both Republican and Nationalist Spain; Finland on Axis side until 1944, and on Allied side since then; Romania on Axis side until August 1944, and on Allied side since then; France on Allied side, but also for Vichy France on Axis side; and for Italy on Axis side, but also for the ICAF on Allied side !!!
I have also found a solution not to do copies of speechpacks, which means that, if you fly Italian for example, you will use the same speechpack, whether you fly on Axis side or for the ICAF !!!
I tghink this opens new possibilities to this sim... but I am sorry, because I still can't find the solutions about the markings and numberings !!!
Anyway, if you are interested, I can upload it somewhere. But I have no place to host it, so... maybe at combatace, for example ???

I for one would really appreciate this mod as it is now, no worries about the markings...I'm sue they will come with time...maybe sooner if a beta of the mod is made available.
I suggest you upload to SpeedyShare or similar, then open a thread in the Beta mods download forum here on AAA and give a download link to your mod.

In fact, I think about making the 2 mods (Nations, and More Squadrons) in a one and only mod... because each one needs the other to work...

now, for uploading mods standard procedure is :
1 upload your beta/Wip mod on any filehost server ( filefront,rapidshare....)
2 make thread in beta mods section with d/l link and info
3 once it becomes finished (final) mod send it (or link to it) to mrJolly for approval and upload (+ PM )

I tried a few things:
1. I changed the names of all Nations to the official name of the nation's air force at the time
2. I changed the regiment names from french to english
3. I am looking for ways to get the roundels working...
If you want to, I can send you the two files I modified, gaston (for the names)
Examples:
Finland becomes Suomen Ilmavoimat (on both sides)
France becomes Arm

If we find out how the MAT-manager makes IL-2 read the alternate roundels/numbers, wouldn't we be able to work out how to get the roundels onto the planes of the new nations?
