Rabaul isnt on this map.

So it should be all jungle infested island then? There were no mobile land units in the Solomons?

I'm mainly a ground pounder and just thought it would get boring without roads for mobile units.

- spud - 29.12.2007

There were hardly any armor units at all. Total tanks used is amazingly small. I bet all of them put together in the Solomons wouldn't add up to one minor armor battle on the eastern front.

It was all about water and airfields. Bombing attacks were on airfields, and shipping for the most part. That and coastal defenses. One reason I'm so gung ho for trees to the water edge is that barge hunting was so common. Small shipping moved at night, tued up along the coast during the day to try and escape air attack.

For example, the japanese operated TWO tanks at Milne bay. Not two tank regiments, 2 type 95 tanks.

The japanese had a total of 12 tanks on Guadalcanal, 10 Type 97 Medium Tanks and
2 Type 95 Light Tanks. Two were damaged landing them, so only 10 were operational, lol.

They had 9 Type 95 Light Tanks at Biak.

2 tanks were sent to bouganville for one operation, a type 89, and a type 94. Thios was after the US took the south. I think there were probably at least a half dozen there before the US invaded though.

So there shouldn't be any targets other than buildings, etc anyway.

Ah I see. Big Grin Having this info puts this map into much better perspective. If I cant make the roads look any better I'll get rid of them.

I'll see what I can do about the trees closer to the water, but like I said in a previous post, it just doesnt look very good, and sometimes the autogenerated tree textures do odd things in certain areas, depending on how the land is oriented.

I've also tried some different tree textures, I think they look way better now. Observe:

The tree textures are the same as the Burma map, which look much better now, and the underlaying airfield texture is from the new MTO map. Its much lighter than what I had before, which was a texture from Desert Online.

An this is on the southern coast of Guadalcanal:

Looks awesome skunk...the new tree texture is much better, and the terrain in bottom shot is especially nice.

BTW, please take all my comments in the constructive way I mean them. Your map ROCKS. Seriously. It's the map I always wanted... well, I also want a real New Guinea map, Wewak, Dagua, etc Big Grin

That 2d to last shot is henderson and fighter 1, right?

Is there a more dirt colored texture? It was either mud or dust depending on the weather from my reading Smile

Also, I'd totally remove the hangers if that is possible. In general for the Slot, I'd always err on the side of crappier facilities or none at all. A mission builder can always add the 1 or 2 structures that might have been there, but taking them away...

Wow, Amazing work man!

I cannot wait for the great campaigns/missions for this... I love the pacific campaign.

- ClockWatcher - 30.12.2007

Skunkmeister,

You are setting the bench mark against which all other maps will be set!

- RealDarko - 30.12.2007

Man this will be the best map ever!! Can't wait to fight on it!!

- Skunkmeister - 30.12.2007

I just noticed on the pictures from pacificwrecks.com that you are right spud, there were no hangar facilities at Henderson. All the aircraft you see in the pictures are parked between the runway and taxi way. I'll remove them. In fact I think I will remove all the hangars that I put at Buka, Buin, and Kahili as well.

About the ground texture around Henderson and other airfields, the one I had in this picture would suit better?

Clockwatcher: thanks for the kind words, but I thought that that honor went to the Slovakia map Wink

- FA_Cheech - 30.12.2007

I personally like the darker selection linked in the post above.

So do I 8)

Skunk, here is a close-up view of the bare dirt areas around current airport at Lunga Point. Comes from Google Earth...free and a superb resource to map makers for terrain colors, etc.

- Skunkmeister - 30.12.2007

Thanks Cheech.

I changed the entry in load.ini for a darker texture.

- Skunkmeister - 31.12.2007

Another minor update: I've played around with the beach textures from Wake. Looks more natural now. I also adjusted the elevation model to look more natural as well. Spud will be happy to know that I placed as much mangroves as the game would let me without having it get ugly.

There are only some villages left to place here and there on the islands, and some airbases to adjust, and she should be on here way to download for you all. Give me a few more weeks.

Here are some screenies:

These two shots show what I did to line the 2D layered trees with 3D palms so that you dont taxi into the tree line and curse over TS. Wink

This next shot is just an ambiance shot from Buin Airfield.
