Glad you like it Anatoli.
Here's a view of San Ton Nhut now finished and tested.
B-24 overflight.
Quite a busy scene.
Even tested the jets at Tan Son Nhut and Bien Hoa.
Just bringing all the airfields up to the same standard ie. runways and taxi strips then
will upload a further update to my 4Shared and will post the link here and at SAS.
Wishing you all the very best, Pete.

Departing Cam Rahn Bay
I've altered the ed_map_t.tga so ships can now use this part of the map.
Being on the coast I would have thought it would have been navigable anyway but it wasn't :???:
Wishing you all the very best, Pete.

Hi Pete,
Thx for this update...
Check MP...

Here are a few shots showing recent activity on this project.
I have finally made a start on populating Saigon, here you see KevinP's road
plates being used to map out the city plan. Thanks to Akvadis I have sufficient
information to position the most important buildings.
Here is a Slovak church standing in for Notre Dame Cathedral.
Tree lined avenues. Some of these appear very wide in Google images so it may be
I need to add another road each side, though that may be overkill.
Buildings and communal areas.
The water course around both Saigon and Bien Hoa have been altered to more reflect what
you would see on a map.
Due to the fact the rivers are navigable and thus oversize the scale is obviously out so
things don't look quite as tight and neat as they would if the rivers were done in the
normal way.
The changes to the rivers course necessitated re-building the airfields at Saigon and
Bien Hoa so that has slowed things up a bit.
Wishing you all the very best, Pete.

Just a quick update on the changes around Saigon.
Tan San Nhut is now operational again after re-building and has two runways as indicated in the
reference material sent to me by Akvadis. Google images appear to confirm a second runway
North/South ish, so this was added. The smaller runway with the A-20's landing.
The airfield has now been moved closer to saigon which you see in the background.
Both runways were set up to operate aircraft from each direction, but like the runways at Tourane
there is a glitch here, the sim for whatever reason won't use them all.
Building work in Saigon is progressing.
The rail yards.
The seat of colonial power, what I think is the Governers residence, or whatever the French
colonials called it. Still needs work.
My interpretation of the City layout, the info from Akvadis has proved invaluable here, both
the photographs he posted and the diagrams he sent me. I would appreciate any input
on this from Saigon residents please, am I anywhere near Hawkman?
I've also finally managed to make a tree map for some of the textures, thanks to the superb
tutorial by KevinP.
Here used on those lovely paddy field textures by Bombsaway. From the air.
And close up.
Not sure what this does to frame rates but it is experimental at the moment. I thought if I
increased the density of the foliage it might work as a stand in for swamp land or flooded areas.
Any thoughts on this would be welcome.
Here is the effect on one of my Googled textures, VietnamAgriculture1 for anyone who has
the WIP map.
Wishing you all the very best, Pete.

Looks good

Wow Pete.
hock: I really like the trees. Cant wait for this next update.

Thanks guys for the comments, glad you like things so far. Not sure when the next upload will be yet, I keep messing with other things so the map isn't getting the attention it should at the moment. I have a long weekend off shortly so I might make some further progress and upload the work so far. I want to populate Saigon some more and add the rail line from Bien Hoe into Saigon so I can link the the two with a rail line. I will include the experimental tree maps as well.
Mark by the way did you get the SU-26 flying, I thought I'd sent you a reply but realised the day after it hadn't gone so sent a second message.
Wishing you all the very best, Pete.

HI Pete. Yes I did get the 26 flying. Thanks.

Hi Pete,
As I was looking for documentation, I found these 2 pictures of Tan Son Nhut in a book, taken from 2 different positions in early 1954 :

Those photographs are absolutely superb Anatoli, nice find, thank you very much. I've downloaded them from the link you sent me cheers. I will certainly give it a go. The info Akvadis sent me indicates barracks etc. around Tan Son Nhut during the Forties but it is only a sketch of the area and doesn't give any detail as such, whereas your photos show everything very precisely. I added the second runway based on those previous illustrations and modern day Google images, unfortunately your photos don't give any indication of that but do show a tremendous amount of detail that can be added, looks like I'm going to be busy on Sunday. As you say in your PM you could have a go at building it and sending me the file but I'm not sure I'm competant enough to start messing in the static.ini. :???:
Besides the airfield and surroundings have been re-moddeled since the last map update so you would need the current map, not itself a problem because I could upload it for you.
Here are a few images of the work going on at the moment.
This shows the tree map applied to a second texture, my VietnamGround.tga.
I've started to construct something to represent Cat Lai Seaplane base. I've seen photographs of Sea Otters and Catalinas at the base but unfortunately they only showed the aircraft and no detail so this is my take on things.
The next few images show the new tree map textures used to replace the wood effect of the sim that was previously used around all the airfields. This is the area around Tan Son Nhut.
I think it gives a more natural effect, you can see the trees moving in the wind which is really 8) .
It has the added bonus of allowing aircraft with a long take off run to get airborne without then running into the previous effect and exploding, just don't watch them flying through the trees eh
I was intending to upload the next WIP sometime in the next week, I'm just testing Cat Lai and I wanted to add some more detail to Saigon, as well as run the rail line from Bien Hoa through to Saigon. This added info could send me on a building spree.
It may be better if I upload as is once I've tested Cat Lai and leave the other detail till later, what do you think :?:
Wishing you all the very best, Pete.

Ok... 'Sounds good to me !!

For those that have been following the progress of this map now for a very long time here is the link to the latest update of my South Vietnam map. I was going to further detail Saigon and run the rail line from Bien Hoa to Saigon but have decided to upload the map as it stands at the moment. See readme for changes since the last update.

Tan Son Nhut has been deliberately left devoid of buildings pending a re-build following the posting of those superb images by Anatoli; he has expressed a wish to have a go at doing this work so I'm uploading the map now so he can begin the process of populating the airfield. Thank you very much Anatoli for the info and your continued encouragement, have fun.
Wishing you all the very best, Pete.
- Bombsaway - 08.05.2010
Oh yeah!!! I've been waiting for this update Pete. Thanks.
I really want to see those trees. You really deserve a great thank you for all the hard work you have done with this map. Its been a long time since you first posted pics of your WIP and now this map has really taken great shape. Thank you so much Pete and I cant wait to see how it grows in the future.
- Mission_bug - 09.05.2010
Thanks for that Mark, I owe you a great deal for the work you've done to lift this map to what it is today, your textures and encouragement kept it alive. There were times when I was painstakingly moving along the river banks flattening things that I nearly gave up. Your texture work spurred me on. It is now starting to become more enjoyable rather than a chore, still very frustrating though. I hope the trees don't dissapoint. I'd like your thoughts on them please if you don't mind. They are primarily intended for use around the airfields to help give a sense of a real place when you are at low level, the flat textures just don't do that so hopefully this helps the immersion. I could do with darker trees to help the effect but will just have to make do with what we have in the sim. The textures without the tree map will be used elswhere.
The railway has finally come to Saigon, sorry too late for yesterdays update.
I had to shift things slightly to one side to allow the train into the yards.
It stops here, I'm not going to extend the usable track to the docks, KevinP's tracks for that..
Here on the landmass between Bien Hoa and Saigon, shame the bridges can't be used.
Appologies for not sending you a PM to let you know it was uploaded, it was quite late when
I finally got it all assembled and uploaded, hope it works ok.
Wishing you all the very best, Pete.
