I had the same problem with some .tga files and PS CS2 also...

Not sure why. The same problem happens for me too. CS3 can't open them either. I'd go so far as to say that this is the biggest obstruction to future modding. I just hope we can find a way around it soon...

Woohoo! A small sucess.
Found a free program called Xnview
http://www.xnview.com/
Allows you to see quite a few of the TGA's that CS won't open. Included amongst these is the Barrage Balloon and ordnance skins. Worth the 3.5mb download for sure!!!

the SFS extractor that you are using maybe old and if you look at the bottom of the extraction it usualy tells you that 1% of the files could not be extracted properly, this is mainly .tga files, out of say 10 .tgas there is usualy 3-4 that wont open. need to use other programmes for the rest and the ones that wont, may need a newer version.

any ideas at all on any other prog to do this?

It's a long shot, but..;
Martin Wright has made quite a few graphics tools for modding simulators over the years, if he hasn't already made one that can do it, he probably can, however if he will or not is the long shot.
