I use Editpad lite, free version of Editpad Pro. It's way better than note pad, you can open loads of documents in the same window, tabbed style like Firefox and with a powerfull search and replace engine, makes it easy to compare and edit some of the large tex file you come across when modding this game http://www.editpadpro.com/editpadlite.html

I personally like an app called "Notepad 2", although there may be more than one with this name.

It has a syntax highlighter and you can "undo" before the save point (making for easy reversions and less back ups).

Word is good but if you save the file in word, or wordpad for that matter, it adds code to the file which will cause problems. Use them strictly for viewing only.

Use notepad for editing. (Or a good programmers text editor if you find one.)
