RAF Mustang Ia (A-36 Apache?) - Classic EAF19 - 24.12.2007
Would it be possible to create a P51A or to be more specific the aircraft which the RAF used in 1942 that was called the Mustang Ia
I must confess that I do not know a great deal about the visual differences between a P51 'A' + 'B' but whatever they are I wondered if it would be possible to create a P51A or A-36 (no difference?) by firstly utilising the P51B model that we already have, change the engine to an early P39 or P40 engine and change the 4x.50cal armament to 4x20mm cannon armament of the Tempest or Spitfire Vc(4) would be interesting the fly the Mustang Ia (the RAF designation) over Europe on strafing missions.

A-36 had dive brakes.

Perhaps the dive brakes can be grafted on from another aircraft? The Me.210 or the P38? the Me.210 already has dive brakes on both upper and lower surfaces and the size looks ok, the P38 only has them on the undersurfaces but thats better than nothing, alternatively the dive brakes could be forgotten about?

Hi Classic, the A36 Apache was quite different from the P51A. It was designed as a dive bomber rather than a fighter.

The A36 had an Alisson engine which was great for low levle but lost out at high altitude due to lack of efficient supercharging.I'd love to see this plane

That's right the A36 and P51A both used the Allison.

Good idea

To learn more about the A-36 Apache along with the early Mustang development, here is a six part documentary to enjoy.

I do believe someone is working on the A-36.

Lt. Wolf and others are making the A-36A, Mustang F Mk. I, Mustang F Mk. Ia, and the P-51A... There are other Mustangs in progress, but those are the early ones you seem interested in.
