IL-2 Field mod. rear gunner and IL-2 gunner controversy - FANATIC MODDER - 26.12.2007
I mentioned about this before, but I would like to mention it in a seperate subject: It makes sense to make that mod. Not because we ....miss the gunner, but because of the controversy that exists about the gunners of IL-2.

Just on of the posts that I had bookmarked in the past...there was talk in the ubi about it...a lot I think.
All this talk that still exists about this subject, if it was true or not, and the whole morality behind such an action makes it a desirable addition, an addition that I hope will be an easy one too for the modders.
I had noticed in AI-only situations (putting tha autopilot) that the gunners casualties in the IL-2 Field Mod are really high, something that makes sense...in the logic of the stalinist regime, what says suvorov is not irrational..anyway this IL-2 gunner discussion made me ask for this mod...it's up to the team now.

I am really sorry that this topic didn't interest anyone. I always thought that Olge didn't make a flyable gunner position in the IL-2 Field mod. because was aware of this controversy....expendable undesired political prisoners...makes sense...I read in Guy Sayer's book "the forgotten soldier" that soviets were putting "Mongols" as the first wave of attack in front of german minefields. It follows the same logic, so why not?

Contraversial.. Mmm, but it just doesn't make sense. The air gunner may be expendable, but a valuable pilot and expensive aircraft are not.
From a pilots point of view, I would like my gunner to survive so that he can protect me and the airframe.. if he gets killed it's not just a matter of 'oh well, thats another one gone' because the chance of getting back to a friendly airfield to get a new one has now been drasticaly reduced..
If the Soviets thought that little about their valuable aircraft then why didn't they pilot them with undesirables as well?..

Don't know why its not bin added all ready by Oleg because its the same gun the TB3 gunners have.

Because political prisoners have been used for them.

I think so, you are right. I admit, I badly want a mod that would enable us to have a flyable gunner ....BADLY.

I was told (back in 2001) that the reason was purely technical. I was told this again sometime around 2003. I tend to believe things I hear twice.

Ask on this on SimHQ last night because they have a good knowledge base. IceFire reply saying they didn't have enough information for the gunner.

Oleg's team didn't have enough references for the full arrangement of the rear station to model it properly is what we were told waaay back when the Field Mod first arrived.

Seems more plausible reason for it not being add other then its controversial.

thanks madcat. I used to believe everything that was written in the UBI forum, however after I saw various mods that according to some people (the usual suspects) were "not possible" because of every time of possible excuses, I am more sceptical.
MrJolly, can you give us an answer please?
