Impressions about the new maps? - lowfighter - 28.12.2007
I drove a bit on Slaovakia and Basarabia, I'll try now the MTO.
What do you think about the new maps, goods and bads? Textures, village and town appearance, airfields...

Still beta remember.. There are texture faults here and there. But on the whole, they are very, very good.. Especialy when you fly at 10,000ft and take in the new view distance etc..
I landed a P-40 on a small airfield, it was a fenced perimiter, with new figures, Guards with rifles slung, or held at thigh level, watching me taxy in, I went straight into a small hanger and turned about on the spot and switched off.. Started up, and took off again and went to the next one.. Excellent stuff!

I like the fact that the MTO map is as big as it is. Desert Online gets boring fast.
There are some faults here and there as Trooper points out, for instance the odd shaped hills on "Malta". Smoothing out those puppies would do enormous good IMO.
The new textures? Brilliant I say! And the tactical map style of the 2D map for Slovakia is just too cool.
Slovakia makes me want to try my hand at making Austria or something like that, in the Alps somewhere. I guess watchin Lionel Charlet's Ice Hornet last night dont help for that either

I love the hedgerow texture on Basarabia map. Combined with the random trees, I can fly and fly without getting bored. On the other hand I don't like the texture for villages on the same map, looks a bit artificial to me... Have to fly more...
Mountains are cool watching on Slovakia map from a distance, but if you get too close you see those sharp triangles, limitation of the game map engine, sharp peaks look schematic in il2. I still think a bit of softening might imrpove, but not too much, because Tatras are pretty sharp mountains so if you exagerate the softening you end with some other mountains on the globe lol.

I'm curious about the new flowering trees on the MTO map. Mostly found in the towns.

New trees?!!! I'm jumping right NOW to see them
Edit: Bee, I can't find them, hm, maybe you're talking about a texture? Only trees i see there are some palms and the tree line :?

Slovakia is an incredible work of art - it's hard to imagine how Oleg is going to better it for BoB. It seems very sharp and defined and I admire the way the tiling has been obscured (of course, the valleys also have something to do with that):
The attention to detail is a wonder to behold, but I particularly admire the fact that cemeteries have been introduced. One of the omissions that sapped character from the IL2 landscape was the lack of graves. Go to any real town or village and you invariably find at least an old graveyard, if not a modern one. They are one of the cues that indicate a living, breathing community down below (I know that sounds perverse, but it's true):

There was one of the new trees growing right outside my trench line near Bir Hacheim, on the MTO map 8)

Ive only flown on the MTO & Odessa maps so far but the two maps are FANTASTIC! Combined with the new draw distance mod, its just incredable.
Pics will explain better than I can
The maps are quite large, which is a very good thing. Small maps tend to get old, and quite fast unfortunatlly. Having said that it would have been nice to have a little bit more of the black sea east of Odessa to recreate soviet bombing runs on Odessa from the Crimea & intercepting them out to sea.
I was expecting the new draw distance mod to massivlly reduce fps, but it actually has little effect on fps. Only time when it ate away at the fps was when a mission first loaded and the land was being generated as I paned round the plane.

Yes, I know.. but if you give it a few seconds to settle down its alright isn't it.

I have only flown the Odessa online map. I did some start and landing training.
What is the problem with the shaking ground textures? I find the textures a bit repetitive, but on the other hand I guess the texture load is not as big as in games with terrains with big terrain tiles.
I love the airfields with the hidden runways, but the boundaries could be clearer. Now I orient toward the white signs for take off and landing.
How are the spawning positions in dogfight missions? Is there a possiblity for sqadron take off. Or should we try flights only?

Yep, I doubt if there is any fps loss at all, only during those first few seconds of the mission
