Another post in here got me to thinking... - Bearcat - 13.01.2008
I know that most of the guys here doing mods make mods that have to be used in the context of... well.. the mods... but all things considered, like some of the insight that many have gained into the sim's structure and such, how far fetched would it be to consider also making things that do not require one to use" the mod" proper.... like new utilities that could just be used with the stock sim like so many of the other great user made things like IL2 Manager, Mat MANAGER & Stab etc... The thing that got me to even thinking about that was a post by Jolly about a 3D mesh viewer... now that many have newer insights into how the sim works... would it be possible to make a skin viewer so that you can check out your skins without loading the sim? (Great idea Jolly... not sure if that is what you meant though... but uhhhmmm...)
Or an offline object viewer as well like the one on the DE site....... that would be great for mission builders since the one in the FMB is ok.. but it is kind of cumbersome.... which also brings to mind... How about incorporating some of the things similar to the QOT
into the FMB...

I'll support your idea, BC. I skin and having an external skin viewer would be great.

I think you may have to know in which one of the .sfs files the objects are located. As to skins, I think Skinman from the JAVA boys may have that function.

Got it !
It's called Serval's skin manager found at Simmer's paintshop under Utilities. You can install and check out your skins, great program.

Just a thought: to be any advantage over having Il2 running in windowed mode while you skin
(have the arming screen up with a "panel finder" skin showing.)
Wouldn't it have to be a mod for Photoshop too?

You can view the skins already installed, just hit the "Installed skins explorer" under the Windows button. Then you can see the skins you have install in the game!! You may need the latest, 1.21 I think it is!!!!
This program has what you want Bear, trust me on this one, I have used this program for years for my skins.

It only shows 2D pic of bmp though, not applied to model.

So it requires the mesh files from the extracted aircraft and the right way of getting the skin on the mesh.

Would love to have a programme like this for skinning, it's a pain in the butt having to go back and forth to the game to test skins.
Full support the original idea.
