Chain Home W.I.P. - canonuk - 26.01.2008

I've been experimenting with reskinning objects, trying to get something that resembles the Chain Home radar towers that Britain had during the war.

Bearing in mind this is still very WIP, I thought I'd post some pics showing what I've got so far. By reskinning a factory chimney, I've got the transmitter aerials. They need a little cleaning up but I think they're quite effective.

I want to also make the receiver aerials and for that I need 'cross-frames'. I tried reskinning the little radar station object so that only the frame was visible (by adding an alpha channel to most of the texture) and then increasing the height above ground, and that worked when I was close in, but when I zoomed out it changed to a different texture which didn't have an alpha channel, and I thought I had changed the alpha on all appropriate textures.

So, any advice on how to proceed?

Cheers,

Joe

Spot the gratitude

CanonUK, I think its coming together nicely, but can you post a screenie of what it looks like from a distance...? Might help with brainstorming Smile

A good effort so far mate.. I can see what you are trying to achieve. I'd rather have that as is to be honest, than something that looks better but is obviously not a chain home site.. Good work!

Canonuk, great progress on this!! ClockWatcher and I have been working on this also. We've been able to create a Chain Home tower and Eiffel tower in 3d Studio, then generate it out as a .msh file but still need to figure out how to get them into the Objects menu to test the format. Has anyone found a trick to editing model counts the Objects menu as of yet? Would be great IF we can put our own objects in.

Can't you just clone an exisiting object and then swap the mesh over?

My tower is a reskinned clone of the factory chimney

Everything is explained here, viewtopic.php?t=2422&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

ClockWatcher even posted in that thread  If you have .msh in format readable by the game you can add as many objects as you want.

Neil, we used 3DS to model then imported it into AC3D and used their Orbiter .msh export plugin to generate the files. http://supercoldmilk.com/ac3dplug/msh_impexp.html Not even sure if its the same file format but need to try if we can figure out a way to edit it in. Our in game objects have a low poly count also so their may be a limit to what we can generate. Big Grin

Canonuk, cloning is working but if we can get NEW stuff in the skies the limit. Big Grin
