Tunisia Map - _1SMV_Gitano - 30.01.2008
Hi everybody, i was thinking about a possible Tunisia map like here:
(The link is inoperative)
this map would be complementar (no competition) to Maraz's "enlarged" Malta project. My aim is to include all battelfields and airfields of the tunisian campaign from Bone in the west to Cape Bon, down to the Mareth line. maybe it could be nice to include also Pantelleria and some west sicilian airfields.
WIP's probably will be slow depending on available time but so i'll have more time to learn the tricks.
Your opinions?
p.s. i forgot to mention that it should be a full scale map.

yeah, Fw190 was what i was thinking about!!!! :wink: but not only... there are son many possibilities for both Allied and Axis.
I gathered SRTM data i'll begin to work on "map_whatever" files soon!

It is a good idea, your map is more focused in the Tunisia campaign, while mine is more about Malta Convoys.
I can give you the portions I am making if you are interested. I am building a texture for Pantelleria airport you could use too.
Cheers
Maraz

I would love to have a Tunisia map as there is a strong potential in "1946" : we have nearly all the necessary aircraft and the variety of situations, sides, aircraft makes room for very interesting missions and campaigns

ok, seems that map files have been done correctly...
map is huge 518.4x640 km and took about 18 seconds to load on my system (amd 3.8+, radeon x1600xt 256 and 2 gb of ram ddr400).
EDIT: strange, norther tunisia image shoul show also western tip of Sicily (photobucket issue?)

No it isn't!..

simply afraid of what could be the final objects count....if something like finland, it will be simply not playable in coop missions :oops:
that's my only concern about this map...
otherwise...
GOOOOOOOOOOFOOOOOOOOOORIT!

well, i arranged the map so that there are few big cities: Palermo just out of the map and so should be Tripoli.
IMO Tunisian cities were not as big as today so there should be no problems. Furthermore i plan to limit objects cout as much as possible.
EDIT: another possibility is to split the map in two:
1) Norther Tunisia plus Pantelleria and Sicily;
2) Souther Tunisia with Kasserine pass and Mareth line;
opinions?

IMHO, number of objects is not the issue (FPS) but number of targets game has to calculate ( bridges, airbases...) .... as long as you don't have too many different objects at the same area you should be fine. Heck if missions with all those added objects by mission maker works fine ( faith,hope charity .... hawaii populated as malta ...) if game loads them with map its just better (FPS)

Another method would be to do as was done in "Kurland", "Bessarabia" and "Slovakia" : use always the same map but make variants where only a part of the map is populated.
For instance, using the same "base map", three variants : completely populated, populated only in Northern Tunisia + Sicily and Pantalleria, populated only in southern Tunisia.

LITTLE UPDATE
I have found some useful ww2 maps like the one posted by jeanba (btw thanks mate!) from wich I selected rivers to draw on map. So map_h is almost done, next step is map_t. Here I have some doubts as northern Tunisia has mediterranean landscape while the southern part is more desert-like. Still thinkin' if a split of the map could resolve this.
I've found also some hi-res planimetric maps of Tunis, Bizerte and other cities. I wonder if the final version of the map will be as realistic as Slovakia

UPDATE N.2
I cropped the map to reduce workload and now is 392 X 320 km, and it includes only northern part of Tunisia from Bone to Cape Bon and and down to Sousse. Anyway I saved the big old files and in future the whole thing will be only a matter of copy and paste.
Actually I'm still working on map_c and map_h files (had some hard time working with the cliffy coast west of Bone but now it should be ok). I wish i have more time to work on this... :wink:
cheers
