F4U Information - VFS-214_Hawk - 31.01.2008

Thought I'd open it up!


1st Lt. Rolland N. Rinabarger of VMF-214 in his early F4U-1 Corsair at Espiritu Santo in September 1943. Badly shot up by Zeros during an early mission to Kahili only two weeks after this photo was taken, Lt. Rinabarger returned to the United States for lengthy treatment. He was still in California when the war ended. Note the large mud spray on the aft under fuselage.

A color photo of an F4U-1A Corsair of the famed "Blacksheep Squadron" VMF-214 shows it taxiing for takeoff on Vella Lavella in 1943. This was one of the aircraft under Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington's command.

Interesting snap from a magazine article:

Warbirds International, July/August 2006

Shows not only original wartime wear on an FAA FG-1D from 1944, but a little known detail

Shown is the chemical/gas reactive patch which I was totally ignorant of. I'm not sure this was even general knowledge in the aircraft restoration business in 2006, as according to the article this is the only known surviving example

As warning to the pilot, the patch would change color when exposed to certain chemicals or gasses
