Request for Translucent Aircraft Cockpit frame rails mod. - nearmiss - 04.03.2008

A good mod would be Translucent cockpit frame rails for aircraft.

Flying the HUD (wonder woman view) has never been much fun, and having visual ability further impaired by frame rails (especially the big ones like in the FW-190) has never made much sense to me. Flying the HUD the player loses all sense of situational awareness, and only after a little experience does the player get a feel for what to do next in air combat.

The actual view within the FW190 is probably about 20% of the viewable screen area. That just doesn't make sense.

X-Plane has translucent cockpits, which is not what I'm talking about. It is close, but I'm not talking about seeing throught the panel, sides or down below. Just translucent frame rails, which normally block player viewing.

My view of the combat sim world is like looking into a port hole as it is.

I have no peripheral vision and I can not see to the side and look back or down.

I've always thought it would be a plus to just have translucent frame rails, then you still have the situational awareness. Player would still have evidence of frame rails he/she could see through, but not clearly like glass only. Again, player cannot see through the panel, sides or bottom of the aircraft cockpit.

It would be like flying in a P51-D with discernible frame rails, yet not block the players view.

I don't know is such a thing is possible, but if it is it looks like to me a pretty quick solution using Photoshop.

Regardless, I'd sure love such a mod.

I hate the claustrophobic feeling I get viewing from inside the virtual cockpits.

I'd like to see something like this too. I can't seem to get 6 DOF to work properly (even though the other 30-35 mods I have installed do), which would pretty much solve the problem. But aside from 6DOF, in real life, if there is a bar that close to your eyes and you're focusing past it somewhere out there in space, that 1 or 2 inch bar/track will appear to be fuzzy and less of a solid bar. I'm not saying it's invisible, but generally it wouldn't be the blocker that it is in game.

The problem with a mod like this is that in servers with locked cockpits there would be a distinct advantage. I know that not all mod users fly online but this should be considered carefully.

Saunders, what sort of problem are you having with 6DOF, because that is the very best solution.

Hi urufu,

Good question! I don't know. I had installed it after a computer ugrade--new mobo, new cpu, Nvidea 8800 GT. It worked for about 6 missions one afternoon, but then it stopped after I installed another mod (I'm not quite sure about that--it may have stopped between one mission and the next). I have a constant problem getting the seat to raise on F4F, Zero, etc., and somehow I think it might be related. The seat thing will occasionally work fine after firing up the game, and then might not work for the 3 or 4 times I fire it up. That has been happening, by the way, long before I even heard of these mods, and has conitinued through maybe 6 complete re-installs before and after the comp upgrade. Go figure. The reason I think they may be linked is because when 6 DOF crapped out, coincidentally so did the seat raise thing again, and that hasn't "come back yet (about 2 weeks of daily flying).

I haven't tried 6DOF since it crapped out--I'll probably try it again this weekend and see what happens.

Do you use the Mod switcher? - from my experience switching versions kills the 6DOF, I know I'm not the only person to have this problem, and it results in having to reinstalling the 6DOF mod every time you switch...

As a side note; I dont believe the requested mod is a terribly brilliant idea, despite being terribly arcady, IMHO constitutes a cheat.
