Bombs and rockets dont BOOOMMM? - BF-109 F4 - 06.03.2008

This is an idea not very recent but anyway..
Why dont Bombs and rockets explode when we hit them with guns? (excluding bombs inside planes)
Are them designed to resist to enemy fire or something ?
The game might be right because i never heard of situations like that but no problem asking

i dont think anyone was stupid enough to shoot bombs when they were dropped, maybe with the exception of the V1s of course! i could b wrong but i dont think there's data on that or reports for that matter

- Murph - 06.03.2008

Bombs were usually set with timed or altitude sensitive fuses and were not all that easy to explode with bullets. The explosive compound was covered with a very thick steel cover (which became shrapnel when the bomb did explode). The filling itself was not that volatile and needed the fuse to ignite it.

I'm pretty sure that bombers will explode if you hit the bombs inside them. And the drop tanks will catch fire as well.

- BF-109 F4 - 07.03.2008

We have 2 different ideas but i agree with Murph. Bombs are well protected against enemy fire .
And Peter i didnt say shooting to bombs while falling but shooting bombs while attached to the plane

- Baco1170 - 07.03.2008

Bombs have fuses. If the fuse is not ignited, the bomb does not explode.
Thast whay when the fuse failes teh bomb doesn't explode even after hitting the ground from a 10.000 feet drop.So no, machiengun fire wont detonate a bomb. Maybe a cannon round would, but not machiengune fire.

- Carnagexxx - 08.03.2008

Hm but there should be a mod that V1 and Okhas detonate like bombs when hit the ground, in the game you get the normal plane crash

SALUTE

In order for an explosive to 'explode', you've got to have a small detonation, this is why all explosives carry a detonator.

Ex, if you have a storehose with explosives (detonators & explosives are never stored together) & there is a big fire, enough to burn the store down, the expolsives inside will not blow up, they will burn, melt or do whatever, depending on the explosive type. Now, if inside the store you have a gas butane cylinder & that blows up, thats when things start to blow up, one explosion will lead to the other until a massive one occurs!!

Explosives now & then are very safe to handle, they are designed to be transported & bashed around by every squaddie, tom dick & harry in the forces.

Hope my comment has helped.

Conversely, a direct flak hit to the bomb bay of a bomber will cause the bombs to explode.

- SVHAK - 09.03.2008

Hi,

Correct Murph & I belive the game takes that into account, i'm sure i have seen bombers 'blow up' due to direct AAA hits.

the fuse has to arm if you look at the bombs you see a small props on them and thay have to spin off to arm the fuse and woud be moveing to fast to hit and thay had a pin in them so that thay woud not arm wile the plane was flying the pin woud be pulled out wen relased and flak hiting the bomb bay are on the out side of the plane will make them exploed be couse thay woud pecre the outer caseing of the bomb with shush force that thay woud go off

- danger - 10.03.2008

bombs exploding whilst attatched to the aircraft is already modeled into il2.
