Moveable canopies for early war russki fighters - Zoltann - 15.04.2008
Following idea
Historically the quality of russian perpex was verz bad. Manz pilots removed their canopies or
had them open during flight, taking the perf penalty for granted.
Anz chance somebody doing this for Yak 1, lagg 4/4/29srs, mig 3/u_

I agree...

I would like to see opening canopies for all planes ... but that is just me.

These would need their own slots because of the adjustments which need to be made with the flight models as a penalty to removing the canopies. In "Yak Aces of World War 2" it was written that there was a speed, climb, and range penalty for doing this.

It only has to be cosmetic.. It will also be of immense value to the film makers and screenshot artists who produce stunning pics and films for you and me. It doesn't have to have an FM change.

Its simple for FM,
Flying the IL2 aircraft with openable canopy (not removed altough that would be cool too),
which was also practiced, would automatically entail a performance handicap as things are.
So no FM fiddling necessary. Asking for all planes openable is great, but the early Soviet would gain historical accuracy.
Another bonus: I remember Oleg once saying that he modelled those planes after the perf data of
fine, crafted prototypes. Main production run aircraft were notoriously bad quality (hi manufacturing allowances; as unschooled labourers made them), perf suffering.
Flying open canopied would simulate both bad transparancy as well as an accurate perf handicap....

"sliding canopy difficult to open at speeds over 400 km/h, and this led pilots to usually fly with the canopy open, that reduced the speed by 30 km/h;"
Is a flight model mod allowable if it requires a special key to activate (ie. is off by default) and actually reduces performance? No, clearly. But there isn't a logical reason against it.

Zoltann your idea is a great one only if the Flight model took a hit. As it is the Lagg 3 flight model is based on only the very best samples sent for flight testing approval. There was at least a 20 MPH hit for wartime Laggs early series when flown with pre-war models of the same series. I wish Mr. Jolly and company would really re-think the ban on modification of stock Flight models. I for one would support such a mod with good hard data support released as an approved All Aircraft Arcade Mod.
