ALG Runway types - canonuk - 28.04.2008

Hey,

I'm doing some forward thinking about the later build of my Channel map (1942-44) and I'm planning on including about 3 ALG for the USAAF to fly from. Reading about them, I've found references to different materials used for surfacing - Sommerfield Track, Marston Matting, Pierced Steel Planks, Prefabricated Bitumenised blah blah. - I'm lost!

Does anyone have any decent pictures of these surfaces? Has anyone made any new runway textures that accurately portray them?

Also, on a closely related note, are there are really important USAAF airfields I jus have to include? SO far I've got Christchurch, Lymington, Ashford and Woodchurch. You can see the extent of coverage of England here:

So, are there some key airfields I'm missing? I can't really add more than one or two more, but since my USAAF knowledge has some holes, I'm keen to hear Smile

Thanks

Joe

Some useful info here.

Probably just about on your map would be Andrewsfield nr. Braintree . Guess it deserves consideration as it was the first US base in the UK.

My father was part of a C-47 crew that flew out of Greenham Common, including D-Day (at least I think that's what he told me).

Edit: Pardon, this url is already in this topic

Looking at photos, I can see that the texture that is already in the game is very incorrect. Especially since the individual plates were long rectangles that interlocked.

Anyway, I'm working on a new texture for them at the moment. Comments are very welcome - runways aren't my expertise Wink

looks good, except joints are too black imo

- Potenz - 01.05.2008

looks really good, and black joints are quite real remember that this things was building under war presure, and you can expect bad joints.

Potenz.

Looks good cannon. Smile

What about putting some 'dirt' over the black area's, considering the 'meshlike' finish of the plates, it would get all sorts of crud in it.

BTW, nice placement of the jeep, with the tire marks - looks like its been drifting Wink

I guess it would vary quite bit depending on what kind of dirt was below the matting, but I have it on good authority (my Dad) that the dirt would quickly work it's way up and render the matting almost indistinguishable from a dirt runway in appearance.
However, what you've done still looks much better than the default.
