Italian Carrier - Aquila - RAF_Magpie - 29.04.2008

S!

As a brainstorm for the next instalment of the wonderful ship mods, perhaps they might like to have a look at the Italian Aircraft Carrier, the Aquila. I know you guys are busy, but I figured this might be something you guys might be interested in. I myself didnt even know of this nice looking ship, till castalde at M4T discovered it ( http://www.mission4today.com/index.php? ... 5718#25718 - nice find btw), so I figured I'd at least bring it to the attention of you Ship guru's Smile

Here's the Wiki Link:

And here's some pictures of the ship:

and the aircraft - perhaps a nice addition to the 109T & Ju-87E/T

Oh and just for interests sake, here's a tri-motor concept designed for use off the Aquila:

frank.bol.ucla.edu/cb.html Wrote:Macchi-Castoldi MC-605--This is an Italian tri-motored carrier plane (!!). Also tri-tailed. this kit took SIX different kits to make. I needed three MC-205's just for the three engines. The main body is a Bf-110 with Me-410 cockpit and rear-firing guns. A 1/144 (1/200?) Constellation kit furnished the triple tails. The wings folded with dollhouse door hinges. The camo/markings are for the Aquila in the Pacific after its surrender. The Italians were the first put the red line through the stars-and-bars (green replacing blue) to dress it up, and it caught on as the standard post-war marking.

I cannot find a coloured image of her ATM, but as the pictures shown, it seems to be unpainted anyway, so perhaps another excelent rendition like your Graf Zeppelin perhaps?

Excellent find Magpie! Anything that accommodates more aircraft with tail hooks gets my vote! Big Grin

Re: Italian Carrier - Aquila - char_aznable - 30.04.2008

I completely agree, Il-2 1946 is already full of 'what if' planes, so why not some 'what if' carriers  ?

This MC.605 is only an hoax. Last Mario Castoldi's project was MC.207, and its prototype was never completed. A twin fuselage MC.205 was proposed by other designers, but it never went off the drawing table.
Only one G.50bis/OR prototype was built, the final model should be G.50bisA/OR with wider wings and 2 x 12.7 MG more, but due to bad results this project was canceled and carrier Aquila should be equipped with 51 Reggiane Re.2001OR fighter-bombers only.
All Royal Italian Navy ships were painted with a camo like this one (Condottieri III class light cruiser, a WIP of mine):

So it could be added eventually. Smile

What kind of bombs will carry the Re2001? Being a light fighter can't see what fighting power can have the italian carrier. It can't project any serious offensive power

- *{64s}Tomio_I - 30.04.2008

it's a same that wikipedia compare the offensive power of the Aquila to the japanese Taiho

you have to create a generation of pilots and crew, it take much more time than building the carrier itself
the italian was unable to make that

An excellent Re.2001CB 3D model made by Flakwalker:

and its weapons loadout:

It could carry up to 500Kg bombs (1 x 500Kg or 1 x 250Kg + 2 x 100Kg) for short range missions, but exceptionally a 640Kg bomb, and a shortened torpedo (Silurotto) was also developed. Normally it carried a 250Kg bomb for long range missions. It seems enough... Smile
A further developement of this plane should have folding wings, so the carrier could have up to 66 of them.

- ILV_Aquila_Noctis - 30.04.2008

Wanna have dat thing!
But, that plane....3D-Converter needed

- RealDarko - 30.04.2008

Wow!! Nice model!! Exist a land based version too?

THIS ONE is the land based version...
Only 2 prototypes of carrier based version were obtained from it, here is a rendition of that version made by Flakwalker as previous one.

To ILV_Aquila_Noctis: all of these 3D models were done and ready by Flakwalker one year ago and submitted to Oleg, but he refused them. I hope we will have it as soon as we can get a mesh converter.

Obviously, I'd like to have an Aquila carrier, too... 8) Can anybody made it at this time :?:
