Terrain lighting enhanced; small mod - Guest - 19.05.2008

This .MAT files seems to govern terrain lighting and shadowing. As I know "Ambient" is for intensity of colors on the terrain textures and "Diffuse" is for shadowing and also affect bump mapping. Maybe I am just tripping, but I think that terrain on some maps (fly_zo’s Normandy and the Slot for example) looks better with this.

With these my settings it should look little less green and shadows on the ground should look better now.

Anyway don’t hurt to try Big Grin . I would also like to hear what do you think. Just put it in the MODS folder.

Edit: It's only 2kb for download.

Interresting !

Can you post some screenshots to show your MOD. (before/after).
It could be nice !

[EDIT] Sorry we have posted in the same time !!!!

You are fast. But no hurt to try it personally also, it’s just 2kb for download. Smile

- GBrutus - 19.05.2008

Thanks Avala, will give this a try and report back.

In LandLight.mat file you will find lines: "Ambient" and "Diffuse". By changing their values, one can get very interesting results and looks of the terrain, also you can set it according to your preferences, but you must try it first.

I have tried it with several maps and time, and is hard to me distinguish any difference with/without this mod.

Maybe grass is less.... green, and rock terrains is lighter... but I can't be sure.

Don't misunderstand my post. I thank you for your hard work as modder at this community. I'm only giving you some feedback.

Regards.

avala couldn't see any difence, but i think is because i don't know where to see can you post any screen?

before anybody starts to aks for this "this mod doesn't cause FPS problems"

- GBrutus - 19.05.2008

Very interesting indeed! I changed the values to 1.60 for ambient and 2.30 for diffuse and there was a marked difference to the lighting in game. I found that on maps such as Smolensk these settings gave a cartoonish feel to the game but when flying on the Online MT map the new lighting gave a very realistic effect to the desert textures. This is going to require a lot of tweaking with the values but I'm sure some very cool lighting effects can be achieved with this mod. I've included a screenshot but it doesn't do any justice to the actual look in game. Great stuff, Avala. Smile

I am too not sure if there is any diference with subtler setings. After Brutus’s experiment I see that it can be set at higher values too.

Seems that newer maps are looking better then old ones, but it needs experimenting. There is probability that it also depends on other settings too.

The stock settings are:

Ambient 1.00
Diffuse 1.00

But that looks too flat. Here is just with one or another.

I remember mucking about with this last year when I was doing a Berlin map for dedicated night missions. Yuo can make a new landlight file "landlight_nacht" for example, and change the perameters. Then change the map load.ini to refer to the new one instead. By using this and setting the map declination to 10 or less, you can get some truly frightening No Moon Tonight scenarios. Makes just getting around a white knuckle experience!

One drawback: although the landscape and sky become darker, the airfield plates remain at default. This means you can't go too far. A good thing top have in the inventory though. Probably will be useful for simulating weak daylight on winter maps too.

Love the idea Smile Great work.
