MC.202 variants - dfym - 20.05.2008

hello,
does somebody know which variant is the mc.202, that was already available in the game as patch 4.03 with the bunch of new macchis was released ?

in the qmb aircraft selection window it appears a little bit bigger than the other macchis.
since the production date is 1942, could it also be a Series VII or a Series VIII ?
thanks

That plane was the original MC.202 included in the very first Il-2 Sturmovik game (2001), to be fighted in the Russian theater... :?
It's totally wrong both as 3D model and FM, it'd be better to not use it anymore.
Hardball's Aircraft Wiever consider it as a IX serie, but it's only presumptive, it's far to any real MC.202 serie.

would you mind if i ask what exactly is wrong with this plane ?

Hey nice info, good post. It's interesting to read stuff like that, not to get pedantic about the sim but just to get to know the historical aircraft, how they really performed and so on. Everything you've mentioned goes along well with everything I've read and I've often wondered at how the impression one gets after say, reading some good reputable info on the MC202 and then when you fly one in il2, you get a different impression of the aircraft. I mean I like the way I learned more about the Spit Mark V, IX and VIII say from il2, but it's also fascinating to get to know what the MC202 performed like IRL, or the IAR80 and so forth.

I'm all for new aircraft slots just to address specific and strictly historical variants of our favourite aircraft. I want to see a more generous representation of the 109G-6 for one and feel that way about any type which enthusiasts might feel is being a little misrepresented...all for perfectly reasonable considerations however, but just that now the modding is here, it can be done with time and probably will. It's what I like so much about this site.

Hm, also a lot of the italian planes had no "holes in the wing" for the small caliber machine guns, its seems to miss on every default skin

Many aircrafts in game have really wrong FMs, and this problem has been debated many time in this forum, but the final result was that a corrected FM, even if historically correct, can be considered as a cheat by someone, and so it isn't allowed here, only in case of a new plane slot.
Some planes need tweaking urgently, like Bf-109s (too weak) or Spitfire and La-5/7 (too strong), and this kind of work is nowadays possible, but then you can play them online only on servers dedicated to this mod, because fighting against other players without this mod installed could give some unexpected advantages to you or to them. So, vanir, don't expect any fix in future... If a perfectly made Bf-109G-6 will be given us, it will come only as a new aircraft, with a different slot.
Oleg & Co. succeeded in give us a such very large number of aircrafts, more than any other sim, and maybe some are well modeled and some not, anyway I'm grateful to them for their ability.

About MC.202 wing guns... Indeed default skins have smoke weathering only, no holes on the front, but you must consider that 7.7mm Breda SAFAT MG, introduced during 1942, from the beginning didn't appear as a great improvement, adding only a little in firepower, so many pilots made them removed to gain a little in climbing speed and maneuvrability, while horizontal speed remained almost the same. Each plane from serie VII was able to carry them, but they could have been installed or not, maybe default skins are based on it.

And now, some devastating news for you all Confusedhock: : actually, 12.7mm Breda SAFAT wasn't a machine gun, but a small caliber cannon, as it fired high explosive bullets. I've found it definited sarcastically as 'a prodigy of miniaturization'. It seems that this kind of ammunition wasn't sold outside Italy, so if you're a Finnish pilot you haven't to be glad. It's the long awaited answer for your secret question: 'How could it be that some B-24s and B-17s were shooted down by Macchis?'. Obviously, it can't be compared to a regular cannon in both range and damage, but it proved effective and was an advantage against other MG equipped planes. It's also the answer for the second secret and hidden question: 'Why Italians used massively such an heavy and bulky 12.7mm machine gun when there where available lighter ones like the Scotti, used only as defensive armament on some bombers?'
Some French guys made a nice and accurate mod about this weapon, but although it was as historical as possible, even in shots/minute and tracer colour, it was considered as a 'cheat' Sad and is played only in some dedicated online tournaments. BTW, on the contrary 7.7mm Breda SAFAT MG were only a mere copy of British Vickers 0.303 one. Hoping to haven't been annoying...
