Read me for OJ map ...(Okinawa & Japan)
I tried making this map as an experiment a couple of months ago...... in 3:4 scale, the same as my Thailand map...... but after one time it wouldn't load anymore...
So two days ago I made this one in 1:2 scale (the same as Canon's Channel map), since I was slowing down a bit on the finalisation of my Thailand map to see if I got any comments from the people who had downloaded it.
I had to lower the height of the landscape to match the half-scale...otherwise it looked too bumpy and like something out of Lord of the Rings.
So don't complain that Mount Fuji is only 2,000 m. whereas it should be nearly 4,000 m.
I used the same actors static as my Thailand map, knowing that Japan was also a rice-growing nation, and the flora and fauna are similar. I did alter a few things in it though and it still needs some adjustment to get the textures right.
I have done nothing to the map apart from putting a single airstrip at Okinawa....there are a couple of other basic strips somewhere in the Korean coast...just left there to allow initial map saving.
I started yesterday to tuck the edge of the landscape back in to sea level....I worked from the coastline near Mount Fuji ...moving along the coastline to the left all the time....and I got as far as Kagoshima....so the rest of the coastline still has holes where you can see under it from sea level. None of the islands have been done yet ( a mammoth task) apart from Okinawa.
I made the 2D maps the same way as I did for the Thailand map...using google maps terrain version...so all the physical features on the map match those on the 3D landscape.
There is a simple tourist mission included in the Ubisoft folder...to try out and see the landscape. (I made it flying a P40...but the fuel ran out in Tokyo...so I changed it to a P38...better cockpit view and more fuel range).
IMHO the best thing about Japan are all the islands, which are a delight to the eye, especially in the Inland sea.
My own all.ini file is in the MODS/MAPMODS/maps folder...but if you want to add the lines to your own then just add .... OJ OJ/load.ini
There are of course no strange objects upon the map...so there shouldn't be any static.ini problems.
You are free to alter, adjust, change, modify, etc. etc. to carry on from where I have left the map in its present state....just give me a little credit in small print at the end.....

just download the maptools FMB and have a go at making airstrips and laying a few textures and objects down...just make backups when everything is going right....for when it doesn't

FF, that is amazing. Really nice job!

i found some bugs, there is a airstrip in mid ocean off okinawa that is porous and the airfield marked on okinawa looks a little lumpy.
- fabianfred - 13.06.2008
Don't worry...this is a completely unworked map
I just used a very early actors static file from a Thai map with a couple of strips and buildings...just so as to be able to save missions upon it.
The strip i put on Okinawa i did try to get flat....maybe another look is necessary
really no airstrips are that useable....use airstarts or amphibians
This is for you to try ....and if you want to download the map tools, then have a go at adjusting and deleting things yourself.
I have used a slovakia town texture which is a bit dull compared with the surrounding textures...so i have adjusted the contrast of it in Photoshop and will use it as a custom texture if I ever get this map finished......I still have the Thailand/Burma/Indo-china map to complete first though.

This map is absolutely beautiful, I am tempted to refer to it as "the Slovakia of the Far East!"
Well done!

I have posted at my usual site a mission for this map....and included are new map_c/h/t files and map_c table....replace the originals with these...
I have made the passage between Kyushu and Honshu navigable by ships....they refused to go through before
also flattened the ground at the airstrip on Okinawa and done a little tidying of the coastline
"OJmission" .... F4U's attack a ground base on Okinawa as the fleet arrive for the invasion

Hey Fred,
Thanks for taking the time to put this together. It look spretty good from the short flight I did. The choices of textures are of course pretty rough and ready but simulate the look of the land quite well. I think the mountainous areas are especially well done.
some points for you or whoever chooses to continue this project.
If you look at the coastal regions around Osaka/Kobe and Yokohame thru Tokyo you'll see many very geometric shaped islands. These are artificial ones built mainly for industry, although some, such as the one I live on in Kobe harbour, are residential. They were built in the 70's and 80's and so obviously would not be there in 1940.
The town/city texture could stand to be a it darker. remember, Japanese towns are closely built, even in the countryside, so I think a darker, greyer/browner texture would be good.
I have no idea how to do any of this so am just suggesting a couple of ideas in case someone wants to take the map further.
Overall, I like it.

Thanks for your info FSM
I know you said before about the islands.......and working at 1:2 scale gives straight edges and 90 degree corners to many coastal regions
I will try to correct what I can, but I don't know which islands are real and which not, so I'll just have to guess...
All the islands, especially in the Inland sea area are very nice to fly over.
I did widen a few gaps between islands and mainland yesterday to allow the passage of ships....especially the straits between Kyushu and Honshu....they are a little too wide, but the il2 game engine demands it..
I have also altered the colour of the dull looking slovakia town texture so that it blends in more, but I haven't included that yet.
Textures were just grabbed from my Thailand map and need a lot of re-laying by hand in the FMB
I shouldn't think there is much jungle there though.....lol
Fantastic - Dixiecapt - 01.07.2008
I love this Map, It's Fantastic!
This would help me full fill the Dream of a
Pusan Perimeter Campaign.
I always wanted to do a USMC Corsair Campaign.
During the early months of the Korean Conflict the 8th US Army was pushed down into the southeaster tip of Korea, and were at threat of being pushed into the sea. The 1st Marine Division came to their rescue acting as a fire brigade for the 8th Army, allowing the UN Forces to hold the Perimeter. Along with the 1st MarDiv came the Jeep carriers Sicily, and CVE-116 Badoeng Strait.
On the Badoeng Strait was VMF-323 the "Death Rattlers" Whom acted as cover for the Brigade.
Can't wait to see a finished version of this Map!
