Maybe a different cockpit for the Avenger? - AIRdomination - 27.06.2008
If you look at the avenger from external, you'll see that it has a sort of "telescopic" sight. And when you revert back into the "buffalo" cockpit, the gunsight is normal.....
How many of you agree that the SBD-3 cockpit is better suited? It has the telescopic gunsight we look for...and more complex cockpit for a "bomber" aircraft....I think its better suited....
Opinions...?
If the SBD-3 cockpit isn't good..then maybe the F2A cockpit? It also has the telesecopic-like gunsight, and the rest of the cockpit is no different from the Buffalo cockpit now used...the better thing is the gunsight looks more accurate....

I second that.
There was one early version with a modded SBD pit, that IMO was the best. I think now one of the local Techs can delete to guns, or for the early TBF only use one. Or at least use the U.S. Navy version of the Buffalo.
Just my 1 1/2 cents worth.
Peace

Is there an easy way to switch to the cockpit of your choosing? Or is there a way I can at least switch to a more reasonable cockpit...? Or is this something that has to be done on the Modders end?
Please get back to me.

I think the original version of the Avenger pack contained the SBD-3 pit, with the 'tube'.
Personally, if I were you, I would just wait a while... you might see something more... suited... to the avenger pop up.
As a side hobby I'm looking into correcting the incorrect 262 pit ATM - as a training exercise for the Whirlwind's pit, so...

Alright. no sweat. Just wanted to know If I wasn't the only one

I don't believe that the TBFs had a telescope for a sight. In allot of the pictures you see of the Turkey, I believe that the object you see out in front of the canopy is actually a gun camera. The F2A-2's cockpit, IMHO, would be much better suited for this plane. It would also come with the bonus of having an opening canopy.
Mr. Jolly has said that he would look into this when he gets some time, but I'm sure that it is way down low on his priority list. If Magpie is implying that a whole NEW cockpit for the TBF is forthcoming, well then, I can gladly wait!
- RAF_Magpie - 28.06.2008
Oh I wasn't quite implying it - more that you would be surprised at what could come in the near future...
- AIRdomination - 28.06.2008
i'm pretty sure I saw that "tube" INSIDE the canopy, not outside
- VT-51_Razor - 29.06.2008
Well, I won't argue with you on that. I'm sure it's quite possible. Back when I was asking MrJolly to switch over to the F2A-2 cockpit, I actually tried to research this very subject. I have a book about the TBF/M and could not find a single picture with a telescope sight, but I figured it wouldn't matter all that much. Then, in the thread where we were discussing this, someone mentioned that the telescope sight in the F2A-2 could be changed for the reflector sight anyway. In either case, I would be happier with the F2A-2's cockpit.

Same here Razor. F2A or SBD-3would suit me just fine
Better than what we currently have in my opinion. But I'm thankful that we at least have something

Correct. The Avenger was not designed to be a dive bomber and thus, did not have a telescopic sight common to dive bombers of that era. What is seen in front of the windscreen is the gun camera.

F2A is not a dive bomber either, yet look what it has...

The F2A was designed in the 1935 when the ring and bead was the standard sight, the telescopic gun sight was thought to be better for accuracy. While true for a rifle, the telescopic gun sight proved to have too small of a field of view and was ultimately replaced by the reflector sight in aircraft designed in the very late 30's and beyond.
