Why No Railroads? - Boris The Spider - 24.07.2008

I've been downloading maps like crazy! They're all quite good, but one thing I've noticed....few have railroads. The East Africa map has a short one (with very interesting terminus's I might add) but many do not. Is it tricky to add track? I saw on the 409 Slovakia map there was what looked like a very cool engine house area but none of those tracks were connected to anything! Now I figure that you can't easily (or at all) make every bit of track usable, I'm not even asking that really. But is there a reason the mapmakers haven't included them in their maps? In real life pilots often would follow railroads when the cloud ceiling was low and they couldn't see that well or were lost. Even if they weren't usable having them on the maps (where appropriate) would, at least for me, add immersion.

Just curious is all. I love rail busting missions and just wish more of the new maps had them.

My Thailand map has an extensive rail network......in that kind of country where the monsoons make roads impassable (most roads are dirt) the rail really comes into its own.....

I'm like you and enjoy playing with trains

Big Grin GREAT! Big Grin Is it available yet? I didn't see it on the Map Mods Download section. :?
Jungle rail! Ripping up the bamboo with Tiny Tims! Mmmm-mmmm-mmmm!
ALL ABOARD!

I don't think tiny Tims made it into the war proper...let alone the Burma theatre :?

However there was Beaufighter activity when we were driving the japs out....and they have suitable firepower 8)

Don't expect to see any bamboo apart from where I placed it in towns........and I had to make my own too

Nope, the Tiny Tim rocket was not used in combat nor was it a particularly accurate weapon. As for the lack of railroads, not all places on Earth had railroads during the war years. I kind of doubt that the Solomon Islands have them today.

Well of course I don't expect railroads on Pacific Islands nor railroads deep in the desert. I just want trains! I'm a lot like Gomez Addams in that respect, theirs nothing like a good train wreck, especially if I'm the one wrecking them as I swoop down on them. As for Tiny Tim's, well God Bless them every one.

fabianfred, nice bamboo. (insert missing thumbs up smiley here)

There are a few hundred kilometres of rail network on the Battle of France map, and more than 500 bridges, many of which are rail.

No stations or sidings so far but these will come.

EXCELLENT! Europe had a vast railway web. I'm glad to see this will be incorporated. Actually outside of the mesh that gives you that flat platform (as opposed to using Objects 141 & 142) that would be find as the only "object" at any rail station as far as I'm concerned. That gives the mission builder/template maker a lot of room to create different kinds of stations, especially now that we have the new objects from 4.09.

One thing that has always disappointed me is the lack of Marshalling Yards with trains waiting to be strafed or bombed, unless I have missed them completely, but bump for the increase in Marshalling Yards on Maps.

Cheers, MP.

Marshalling yards can certainly be placed upon a map ....either by the map-maker or mission-builder

but since the game engine only allows a train to start/stop ... no restart or pause...and 'live'rails can only be placed a certain distance apart......it requires time consuming work to get them looking anything like realistic by fiddling with the mis file in notepad

in the missions section here is a link to my co-op pack ..in which there are a couple of missions ...Railyard and Eurotrain where I have done that
