[WIP] Korean War OJ Map - Dixiecapt - 24.07.2008
I've blabbed about this little project for a while, its my first attempt at map building. I spoke with FF after taking a likeing to his OJ Map, and began to create a version of this map that would reflect the situation in Korea from June 1950 when the Communist NK army invaded South Korea, until just prior to the Chinese involvment in the war.
This Map would contain the campaigns of the Pusan Perimeter, The Inchon Invasion, Fall of Seoul, and attempts by 8th Army and 10th Corps to surround and destroy the NK Army.
4 Airfields have been built from IL2 Airfield textures, as another 3 airfields are being historicaly recreated with plates.
Here are some photos of the very very WIP Korean War version of the OJ map....

looking good....
if you download the latest Thai map version 2a patch you will find there are two SK textures I brightened up and made to blend in with the other bright coloured textures....you may find them useful too. (I renamed them fsk and in the load.ini to avoid mixing up with the default ones)

Nice job Dixie, airfields look great. Please keep it up.

Thanks!
Firstly I forgot to mention that Badger made the Korean War VMF-323 Skin, which I love, Thanks!
(You can get a copy in AAA skins section)
I still need to flesh out the Tsuiki Airbase, and Build from scratch K-3 Pohang as these were also very important fields in the begining.
I chose these airfields based on this information I read...
(BY THE WAY Pick up a copy of
Max Hasting's "The Korean War" if you have interest in such!!!)
Quote:"Early in the Korean War, FEAF (Far East Air Force) utalized existing airfields in Japan and South Korea. Many of these were formerly Japanese Military airfields, and some of them had been taken over by the invaders, leaving only a handful of airstrips in the southeastern corner of the peninsula available for United States Air Force use. The most important of these were K-2 Taegu, K-3 Pohang, and K-1 Pusan West. The 930th Engineer Aviation Group and its 811th and 822nd Engineer Aviation Battalions, deployed from Japan to Korea to keep these fields operational. Aviation engineers in Japan improved airfields at Itazuke AFB and Tsuiki AFB for tactical fighter/bomber missions to Korea, just across the Korean Strait."
There are only two other airfields that will be on this map, However they will be around Seoul and will belong to the Communist North Koreans for most of the Historical Action that took place in this area, at this time. The North Koreans had Yak-9's and IL-2's during this period, but the USAF took care of them by the time the Chinese came into conflict.
The two Seoul Airfields are
K-16 Kimpo, and
A-2 "The Racetrack". Kimpo was Seoul's largest airfield, where as "The Racetrack" was hardly an airfield at all.
Listen to this testimony of a USAF L-19 "Bird dog" pilot talking about "The Racetrack"...
Quote:"I had about 9 hours when my buddy the Ops officer called me. He had a mission to Seoul, which would give me my 10 hours. Landing at A-2 airfield in Seoul was not easy. It was called the "Racetrack" because that is exactly what it was. They took one of the long sides of the oval track, lengthened it the few yards that could, and that was it. So - it took a power approach to get in there, and not go off the end of the "Runway". In flight training we had plenty of experiance using a power approach (similar to a Navy Carrier approach). Pull the nose up to a near stall, and control your decent with the throttle. If the engine quit your ass was grass, if there was any."

BTW HISTORY BOOK PLUG:
Loving This Book, Max Hastings the Korean War....
Reading it for my Korean War OJ Map
The Flying Fish Channel - Dixiecapt - 25.07.2008
I'm going to have to edit the Map_C again and make the Flying Fish Channel more easy to see from the air.
Everything you see in this map as mud flats will be shallows in the game.

Nice Map Capt. and for the skin.....anytime, I'm glad you like it..
Inchon and the Flying Fish Channel - Dixiecapt - 27.07.2008
Ladies and Gentlemen I give you Inchon, in its Beta form.
IL-2 Beta INCHON
To get to Inchon you had to travel down the Flying Fish Channel, the rest of the Korean Waters in this area were usually Mud Flats. The Invasion fleet on September 15 had about 3 hours to land the invasion and get out because of the tides. The Channel also had a current of 3 knots because of the tides.
Note that for some reason the Flying Fish Sand and Mud shallows wont show up in Perfect mode....
Which i will fix

Begging for a Map_F - Dixiecapt - 04.09.2008
Well Ok, Taking a shot in the dark here.
Even though my main Project is the VMF-213 HellHawks Slot Campaign I really wanted to again see if ANYONE out there has the time to Rework the Map_F of the OJ map.
You can find Fabian Freds Copy of the OJ Map in the WIPs. The Map_F of that Map will work with this one just fine as the coasts are practicaly the same.
Joe I know you said you'd try to get to the Map_F but I haven't bugged ya about it because I'm sure your swamped with the final version of your Channel Map.
But If anyone has the time could you respond and give it a shot. I can't really enjoy this map in Expert Mode until such has been done.
Thanks either way people!!!

This really looks swell Dixie, how we coming? I could have some real fun with this.
- Foxman - 18.11.2008
I tried seeing the download link for the beta but it was a red x in a box, do you know what happened
- Anthony817 - 29.12.2008
So did this get finished or not?I would like to dl this if at all possible?I plan on making a Korean war server I hope.
- Dixiecapt - 31.12.2008
This Map is actually just become a WIP again!
I'm a member of the virtual Squadron the 3rd Bomb Group.
Part of what the third Bomb Group did in Korea was fly B-26 Intruders throught the war.
This Christmas I got a wonderful present, a Nice Dell Laptop that allows me to use IL-2 In Perfect Mode.
There are two tasks I'm stumped on and working on, and thats how to build working bridges for the roads and rail, and how to craft a Map F that will work,
Map F makes up the far horizon, but its only used by people running machines at expert level or below. I don't know how to get the Map F to match up well! But, I will find help.
Look for this in a few Months and Remember its only the first part of the war, when
(Historicly) the P-80 was the only jet in town. With Okie, and Japan this map is perfect for Early Korean A-20G and B-29 Bombing Missions. Along with the Missions flown by the Marines and Naval Corsairs from Jeep Carriers, and the Air Force P-51s.
Pictures soon
Map in a few months
special thanks to Fabianfred again.
