A Possible easy project for you 3D modders. Ki-61-II - Jadehawk - 17.08.2008
Hey all,
Some of you know I did a profile of the Ki-61-II which is the final version of the Ki-61series.
Here are some examples:
Note, the ones I did in profile are the "Bubble back" version. The one we will get in the game would be the earlier version with a "fast back". Both styles existed and in fact a "fast back" example resides in a Museum in Japan.
These are Powered by the Ha-140 engine and after talking with Jim Long at J-aircraft.com, the possibility of these reaching squadron service is very high. In fact, there are two photographs that show several examples in the markings of the 56th Hiko Sentai.
To make this final version, The 3D modder could start with the Ki-100 we already have in the game, remove the nose from the front windscreen down just below where the cockpit sides are. Then cut back down the fuselage to the point where the wing meets the fuselage and then cut downward to take off the front nose part.
Cut the same from the Ki-61 and graph it in the cutup Ki-100. Once you do, then lengthen the nose to the correct length for a Ha-140 equipped bird and you should be done!
If someone takes up this project, I can dig further for some more details or others can chime in?
Opinions everyone?
Thanks for looking!

Have it 2x30mm and 2x20mm cannons?

I believe the Ki-61 series never had 30mm cannons. In fact, I believe this version had 12.7mm cannons in the nose and 20mm cannons in the wings. Note, the Japanese called the 12.7mm machine gun a cannon.

Oh yeah! Bubble version please!
And while we are at it, why not the bubble canopy Ki-100? 8)

Yup, I vote for both the Ki-61II and Ki-100 bubble canopy. That would be nice, very nice, indeed - just like the Ki-100 at the RAF museum at Hendon.

Ki-61_II had similar armament and ammocount as its predecessor Ki-61_I TEI or its succsessor Ki-100 - which is two 20mm Ho-5 cannons with 250 rpg in fuselage, and two 12,7mm cannons with 250 rpg in wings.

I think is much easier and logical to have a Ki-61-Tei which was the typical late-war Ki-61 and was used in battle a lot. the loadout/ballistics can be taken out from the currently existing ki-100, the FM used can be that of the Ki-61-Otsu and it just needs new default skin.
