2nd generation planeshine mod - reflected - 19.08.2008
I was watching the redbull air race warming up from my office's window, the planes were about a mile from me, they were tiny black crosses on the cloudless summer sky. I could barely see them. But sometimes the sun sparkled on their wings, and I bet one could see it from even 2 miles.. This would be nice to feature in il2 too. I've read several personal accounts of pilots where they say they noticed the enemy from a great distance because of the sun shining on their wings for a moment. Is it possible to implement in il2?

Yeah that's what i d don't like in the game(one of many) you can see the plane when you are in it's a$$ when i'm in my granpas apartment witch is on the 11th flour i can see the cars on the high way from probably 10km away and from 300m i can say what car it is,and here you can't ever read it's board number ... oh and speaking of WWII pilots i read somewere that some pilots saw the enemy planes because of the exaust flames in the night =)

Not all planes were visible like that, for that exact reason. Some used a flat paint to prevent this. The only good thing to come from a shiny slick surface is more speed about 12mph more than with thick camo paint. One reason why later Razorbacks and Bubble P-47s came from the factory with a bare metal finish.
I do see a few problems with this. For one you may get a fps drop for the game trying to render this shine from far away. Second, the way the LOD system works, this will simply not work. The farther away you get the simpler everything gets. Textures become a 32x32 pixel and it would be hard to keep a realistic shine on those files.
There may be a way to do this with a sprite, but it will be a good bit of work to correctly get it to appear at the right distance.
