Aircraft Class Idea ... - Scharnhorst1943 - 10.09.2008

Just thinking, as we are making new planes with new slots now ... listen to this.

Is it possible to combine aircraft class? Take the Ju-88 for example. This plane did EVERYTHING. However in the sim you can only classify it to do only on thing. The Ju88 has a level bombsight, and has dive brakes. However with the dumb AI you can only have the plane be EITHER a dive bomber OR a level bomber ... NOT both.

Is it possible to combine classes, so that in the case of the Ju88, the plane will do dive bombing for ships, trains, vehicle columns but also do level bombing?

Could we do this for other planes as well? Examples would be:

(G-Attack + Level Bomber)
A-20C
B-25J ""
Ju-88
Pe2

(Fighter + G-Attack)
Me-110
P-51
P-47
P-38
Typhoon
Pe3

This should be possible (as should adding fighter behaviour to early model Il-2's etc.) It would require duplicating (X or replacing X) slots though.

It would be nice to make improvements to the AI. I did a few experiments and some improvements should be possible, the code was beautiful - but I lack time and skill to really make anything but the most basic changes (eg. changing the sequence or deleting of different AI defensive maneuvers).

It would be nice to see fighters retreat if they get too separated from allies (this should be possible - I saw code that suggests this) or have a probability of retreating every time they fire their guns.

Other changes could include things like B-25's not strafing ground targets unless their "attack" waypoint is below a certain altitude (ie. just as level/dive bombing behaviour is controled by altitude, it should be possible to control strafing/level bombing behaviour using the same mechanims)

all very true, but I am talking about in a offline campaign or online coop. The AI will act as only one class, from what I have seen. The AI get dynamic generated missions ... I am talking about incorporating this into that, so that AI in randomly generated missions will do the above. I hope I clarified.

And by the way, that news is great. It shows that there is hope for maybe some AI scripting ...
