lights - jamesdeanoo7 - 12.09.2008

I am really new to all this but its really great to see these mods in action. Just a thought but I noticed on the late model beaufighter what looked like 2 lights pointing down at an angle on the leading edge of the wings. This got me to thinking...do any of the aircraft have a leilight or similar searchlight for hunting uboats at night...if not would it be really hard to create one..I guess thinking out loud that the effect would be similar to the searchlights when they cone an aircraft. Just a thought.

depth charges - jamesdeanoo7 - 12.09.2008

My next thought was...do any aircraft carry depth charges??

but we need lights for dam busters once Lanc gets finished

B-24's used to have searchlights (Leigh lights?) to help them find surfaced u-boats at night in the Bay of Biscay.....
I think this would be a great addition to the sim, if doable.
Subhunting? Why on earth not? This sim allows for many scenarios, lets not limit ourselves unnecessarily. (obviously, not the submerged ones, unless someone does a mod that will allow us to sink them... Confusedhock: )
I'd like nothing better to cone a u-boat at night, and let rip with a few depth-charges/torpedo's/bombs/kitchen sink/what have you... Big Grin

Neve rknew i was a light Big Grin

Heheh...yes, the Leigh Light was introduced in 1942, used by RAF Coastal Command B-24's and Wellingtons, and used extensively in the Battle of the Atlantic (Bay of Biscay), to find and attack surfaced U-boats when they recharged their batteries.
It was basically a searchlight mounted on the aircraft.
I hope some modder decides to tackle this, it's historically accurate...
I'll see if can dig up a few pics...

indestructable? - jamesdeanoo7 - 14.09.2008

I thought there was a mod that fixed the indestructable object problem like ships guns... I personally can think of lots of uses in mission building. As stated the way the dambusters got their bomb release height was with lights, search and rescue missions in fact any night mission. With a sim where guys strive to reproduce accurate skins, missions etc I just thought the light and depth charges would be a noce feature. Of course the could also be a weapon onships. Jim

Light would be good

Depth charges would be even better hahaha

because they go boom

but on a serious note i wouldn't mind seeing a depth charge in Il2 but maybe one day

- Guest - 14.09.2008

Its probably more complicated, but maybe it would just entail a slightly different animation/graphic for the depth charge explosions, and then just possibly a reskin of one of the bombs, unless one of the 3D gurus wants to model it... :?:

- BF-109 F4 - 15.09.2008

there could be a MOD to allow depth charges sink submerged subs , maybe its too complicated , i dont know, anyway depth charges basically are just cylindrical bombs and PBY Catalina, Avenger and SBD were the planes that usually carried them .
Destroyers carried them also.

subs - jamesdeanoo7 - 15.09.2008

Maybe it just needs the parameters altered on subs to allow them to be sunk or damaged. There is now a mod so that ships can be attacked with cannon and mg,s right??? The lights thing I think is probably hard as the light would have to move and focus with the aircraft. I must admit all that sort of stuff is way beyond me but maybe there uis a modder out there who will step up to the challenge.
