Importing models from Silent Hunter - The first steps - asheshouse - 25.09.2008

This is part of HMS Revenge imported to 3DS from Silent Hunter.
Actually its a modded Revenge, made to look like HMS Warspite.
The model mesh looks to be about twice the density of a typical IL2 ship model.

The model is converted to obj format using a utility "Silent 3editor" from the subsim web site
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=119571
The obj file can then be imported into 3DS
After a bit of processing in 3DS it should then be possible to export out to IL2 using Dr Jones Mesh Converter.

There is a library of ship models

Looks way above the IL-2 max-poly ability...

- magot - 25.09.2008

yes this is interesting idea but for rework will be more work ... better will be concetrate to finish one Warspite ship project with all things, will be hard work imho ...

- asheshouse - 25.09.2008

I'm planning to carry on with the HMS Warspite model.
I thought I'd post these links in case anyone else wanted to experiment.

Love the fact that a modder, that is in fact doing something illegal (reverse engineering of the game) comments copyright...

Grand idea, keep it up! Wink

The point of the Poly count being perhaps too high is a very valid point, but it wouldn't ultimately mean that they aren't viable options for use..

Out of interest, Ashes, what poly count do you get with that model?

They can have our beautifull warbirds Tongue

Silent Hunter III is an old game. There are newer versions of this simulation. So i dont mind. The man who has made this 3d model got his money some years ago. if I whould be the artist I whould take it with a smile.

This is a good idea because our IL2 fleet is very poor and this methode whould not take so much time to create new ships.

Is that model from Silent Hunter II or Silent Hunter III?

If the SH3 ships are too intense, maybe we could look at some of the SH2 ships and spice them up slightly? Maybe that would be a better idea?

Another good game to look at would be destroyer command ... lots of good ship models there too.

Silent hunter 4 all the way!

wouldn't that just be epic?

Well... let's wait for the fabled BoB engine, maybe that'll take us that far, eh? Wink

Regarding the SH2 ships, they look to be the IL-2 standard or so... maybe with some new textures they'll be direct import?

i was thinking this as well

As I recall, there are alot of Japanese ships we can take from Destroyer Command.
I remember a these ships, and there is probably more ...

-BB
Yamato
Kongo
Nagato

-CA
Mogami
Furutaka
Takao

-CL
Sendai
Nagara
Yubari

Adding those ships alone would do WONDERS for Jap shipping. For the Americans, we could take the following ships from DC

-BB
Texas
North Carolina
Iowa
South Dakota

-CA
New Orleans
Portland
Northampton
Indianapolis

-CL
Brooklyn
Atlanta

And for the European theater we could take the following for German and British ships.

-BB
Bismarck
Tirpitz
Scharnhorst
Gneisenau
Hood
Repulse
Revenge
Queen Elizabeth
Nelson

-CA
Adm Scheer
Lutzow
Graff Spee
Adm Hipper
Prz Eugen
Norfolk

-CL
Fiji
Ditto

Scharnhorst - I haven't checked the model count of a complete model. I only exported the hull section.
but looking at the mesh it seemed to be about twice the density of an IL2 battleship.

The Silent Hunter models include alot of minor details modelled in the mesh which in IL2 are only detailed in the texture. It would be quite easy to remove those I think.

I'm not planning to take this any further at the moment because I want to progress my own HMS Warspite model, --- and get back to map making at some point.

I posted the links so that others who are interested in ships might investigate further.

The next step may be to compile a "library" of ship models in 3DS format, as an interim step to converting them to IL2. Maybe a small destroyer would be a good test of the conversion process. Even if its poly count is too high it should still work ok. No worse than an IL2 battleship.

A lot of the ships available for SH3/SH4 have been made by community members, not the sim developers- HMS "Repulse" being just one example (would be great for getting a more accurate Force Z). In such cases, it would be a matter of contacting the modeller and asking for his/her permission to adapt it for Il2, out of courtesy at the very least.
