Help for someone really new to this - Bob Holmes - 02.10.2008
Just became a member, this is my first post.
First, let me explain my dilema. I'm 66 yrs old, not computer smart, and thus I am easily overwhelmed by technical stuff of all sorts. I enjoy playing IL2, although I don't do it real well. Hand/eye stuff is getting more difficult. But - I do visit and make inquiries fairly often on the Simhq forum. They are really helpful and patient, by the way. While there, I learned about AAA and the mod things, and so here I am.
I have Vista, IL2 1946 with Mat and Stab, and I have patched my game to 4.09, and all is running well. Please tell me what do I need to install to make my game better, in your opinion. I tried a couple of things yesterday, on my own, and didn't do too much damage except the screen that starts up the game was in Russian (I think) and it showed I was only patched to 4.08. But, the sounds were better, I think. Well, the Russian thing scared me, so I used my backup game and got rid of the one I attempted the mods on. I figure I'll start over as you recommend. I have Ac Installer v 2.2, Eng sound Mod ver 09, english Career Language fix, and Wrapper(?) downloaded.
Thanks very much for any help.

Well Bob,
Let me be the first to say welcome. There are a lot of great people here and just about all of them are willing to help you. The first thing you need to do is get your game updated to 4.08m by downloading and installing the patch for it. Once you have done that then go to our unified installer patch for the AAA mods. That is located here:
(The link is inoperative)
After you have that installed well then it's just a matter of picking and choosing the next mods to install. Please read each thread carefully to each mod that you choose to install. Some of them are beta's and some of them are fully completed mods. I backup my whole game once I get it where I like it with all of my mods installed. You should do the same, this way if something goes sour you can revert back to your old backup...Good luck and again WELCOME

Thanks for the welcome, and the response. I did as you recommended. I already had 4.08 and 4.09 installed, so I downloaded the Unified Installer, followed the directions, and all seems to have gone well. Only thing I had now is some of the ranks seem to be in Russian or something, so I'm looking for a fix for that.
Maybe you could tell me one more thing though. Is there some way I can really tell whether all those changes have been made? The load screen indicates the AAA thing, but is there some "acid test" I can use to see changes that were made in addition to that. My hearing aint so hot anymore, so the engine sounds might not be it. Any suggestions?
Thanks again, for your help.

the easiest way to test is to go to the quick mission builder and look at the aircraft list. you will notice that there are flyable aircraft that werent available before like b-17, b-24, etc. this is from the unified installer. have a look and you will see there are quite a few additional aircraft which were unflyable before.
- Bob Holmes - 03.10.2008
Well, I'm proud everything seems to be working. Sounds, more flyable aircraft (I did as you recommended). I haven't seemed to screw anything else up thus far. I even got the ranks changed from Russian to English, with two of the fixes.
May I ask? - (1)I had maps of Slovakia and Bessarabia in the FMB before. They are gone now. (2)Kind of comical - I was playing a campaign, RAF Pilot in France, in my pre mod days. Went back into it, and I'm now flying a JU-88 instead of a Hurricane. The other planes with me are still Brit. Peculiar. I am just gonna install it. (3) I think I have read that I am now able to install any of the other mods, just due to the fact that I have used the Unified Installer. Is that true? I know I need to read the threads with each.
I bet you guys are sorry I found your site, and that I started all this. Now you're saddled with me and my many questions.
Thanks for your help.

Bob - I'm new to this as well, though I 've played Il2 on and off for many years.
I am the same age as you and I found your thread and the replies of the chaps who know quite helpful.
I am at a much earlier stage than you - I am about to install the AAA installer, on to 4.08.
and then go from there.
Does it put 4.09 on for you , or do you have to install that separately? Only, before i found this AAA site, I tried to install 4.09, and did, but the sim wouldn't launch- I got to 95% on the splash screen and then it froze.
I've since uninstalled everything and re installed from the DVD ( 4.07 ) and then patched to 4.08, which is where i am now.

Hey Bob,
FlatSpinMan here (joined this site during the IL-2 Religious Wars, hence the different username). I recognise you from SimHQ.
If you've got the Unified Installer thingy then you're able to add anything not already on it I think. In most cases, if it's an approved AAA mod it'll come with an auto-installer which you just click and then follow the prompts.
Others that don't have auto-installers can generally be installed pretty easily. You'll sometimes need to add a line of text (supplied in the download) to one or two files, usually static.ini, all.ini etc. Just have a look at some of the mods you've already got installed. Click on a few, nose about the files and folders to get a general idea of what's what. Uou can't do any damage just by viewing the files.
Having said all this, I still can't get Canon's Channel Map working - damned shame it seems.
In the RAF France campaign, I'm pretty sure you're flying a "captured" Ju88. Check the briefing again. I know I put one mission in there like that.

About the missing maps in the FMB, if you have the version switcher installed then you may actually be playing on 4.08. The version switcher allows you to fly on unmodded servers by switching from one version to another before you start the up IL2. I'm not sure if it's in the Unified Installer or not.
- Forager - 01.11.2008
Cas141, get the Unified Installer here: (The link is inoperative)
It will add 4.09.
- Cas141 - 01.11.2008
Forager - thanks
Actually, I took the plunge and loaded it. After a good start when 6DOF worked in 4.09, this is the present position.
However, I have a couple of problems i would like help with, please.
The IL2 version switcher in the root directory does not work, when I double click it I get this message
"The application failed to initialize properly (Oxc 0000135)"
So I used the batch files and, following the instructions I double clicked on the 409 mods with 6DOF, and then started the sim from the exe halfway up the directory.
All worked well, and the 6DOF was brilliant to use.
A little while later I went back to the sim but the 6DOF is not now working; I did the batch file again, but no joy. I tried other batch files- the version of the sim changed ( 409 to 408 and back again,) but still no 6DOF.
trackir itself seems OK and 6DOF works in FSX, but I cannot seem to get it now in IL2 1946.
Can someone put me right please? Would it hurt to re-install the AAA over the present install= Seems some things didn't load first time?
TIA
- Forager - 01.11.2008
Cas141, I do think it would do no harm to reinstall the UI.
I have shied away from using the version switchers as I do not go online much anymore and have no Track IR but, for kicks, I just tried it with my UI modded install.
I switched with the batch file to 408 no mods and launched the game from the il2fb 156kb Application icon in the game folder and with my usual launch icon on the desktop and 4.08 LAUNCHED.
I then switched with the 409 batch, launched from both icons again and all is well.

Welcome Bob. Glad you discovered this site, which has added years to the Il2 series... I also am way too old for my own good and have been an Il2 addict since the game first came out. Sorry to hear you have had some problems with the mod installer...I'd have a heart attack if I lost the Slovakia map and all those beautiful Slovakia objects. I was lucky, I guess.
However, I can't figure out the big hangar mod which really excited a FMB addict like me. When I first added the mod and lines to the static.ini my game wouldn't start and I almost had a heart attack. Luckily it was fairly easy to remove everything and try again, but I just can't seem to figure out exactly how to get it to work. Oh well, for every mod which doesn't work, there are 3 which work like a charm.

Moved.
Welcome to AAA.
