A mod to drop one bomb at a time? - J_Hartikka - 07.10.2008

Anyone know if there is any IL2 setting or a mod to allow drop just one bomb at a time, instead of a pair?
In reality, bombs were dropped one at a time, except of course those planes which carry heavy bombs under wings far from fuselage and have to drop them both to keep aileron balance.
All those planes that carried bombs under fuselage or under wings close to fuselage primarily used one drop at a time, although some planes had an option to set bombs to be dropped as pairs, too.
Why then in IL2 sim has only pair drop, when there are more than one bomb? I imagine that the current IL2 way of dropping only pairs of bombs is a simplification from the early development stages of this flight sim, which nobody has yet recalled to fix?
Two bombs together no more effective than one
As a stingy man I find it repulsive to waste half of bombs, because blast radius of two bombs dropped next to each other is not significantly larger than that of a single similar bomb. Only fragment density is increased with double bomb drops, but even then the effect to destruction radius is marginal.
So, if having a realistic option for single bomb dropping, one could have almost double bombing effect with those planes, which now are incorrectly restricted to drop bombs as pairs only..!
For example Ju88, He111, Blenheims, SB2, DB3 are planes used in online games like AW and IL2 war that after long flight to targets now have a very limited count of efficient bomb drops, usually only one or two. Having an option of dropping single bomb at a time one would increase their now moderate bombing capability close to what they were in reality - two or four drops of bombs.

I'd Actually Love This!!
I always wanted to take a B-25 over the the enemy on the deck and have the oppertunity to release my Three one thousand pounders one at a time.
B-17's, B-25's and the whole vast host of US bombers often had relay controls to... you could set to Drop all at once, or delayed for a pattern, or with each strike of the button,

Very important mod (IMHO), I asked years ago for single torp drop on He111 and single bomb drops but nothing was done...............
So
+1 here for this

yes i'd like to be able to drop bombs singly or in salvos

The program triggers hardpoints in pairs (1 & 2, 2 & 3 , ...) It requires creating a duplicate hardpoint (without a weapon) for each hardpoint with a weapon. That is how it is done in the Do-335. I could do it except that I could never get the aircraft classes to recompile, or get assistance on this matter from AAA. Furthermore, slots would have to be duplicated to avoid this being considered a cheat (something I could also do if I could get the compiler to work...)

Id like it if each plane could be as it was historically... if thats the way it is thyen I say leave it, if it was individually though... Im all for it.

Actually, most Japanese Army aircraft had this capability, in fact you'll find many, many aircraft do due to dual drop tanks.....In kind some bomb bay type aircraft like the B25 did....Though I'm not sure if that was an aircraft feature or a field mod.
To be realistic on aircraft utilizing wing pylons however, remember that the drop should be from the side opposite that which counters engine torque first (though in a mod you would NOT alter the torque or weight change to the FM of any aircraft letting it work as normal making the shift only when empty).

Thank you for giving hope..! - J_Hartikka - 20.10.2008

Knowing that there are people that can voluntarily develope this fine IL2 sim even after commercial companies have quit it gives this historical simulator a promising future. To me, it is not just game, it is part of our past - a feat of culture. That is why I greatly appreciate everyone developing this sim by his own interest!
I did not understand too much of your expert explanation, except that you understand it yourself, and that the realistic single bomb drop mod indeed can be done!
That sounds fine, of course - finally someone could fix the major authenticity fault of the otherways very good IL2 bombers!
Single bomb drop
Back to this major lack of bombers. If it makes making the one bomb at a time mod easier, it is not essential to modify the automatics that some bombers have for dropping bombs one by one. Auto aim & drop function is used very rarely in online wars, mainly because there most targets are small dot targets like tanks, which require manual aiming and bomb dropping for best accuracy.
Manual precision bombing is the style that would benefit from the realistic one bomb at a time function most: Flying long way and getting thru enemy flak and fighters to waste both bombs at one drop for a hard to hit tough armoured target is pretty frustrating, knowing that when having the original single bomb drop option one could get another possibility for hitting it...
Sure no air force back then or later would have accepted a bomber, which only allows drop bombs as pairs..!
Pic: An example of a precision bombing site of targets. In AW on-line war IL2 game, one must find and select certain AT guns and howitzers to bomb, from among a variety of unimportant flaks and vehicles of a scattered field camp site, to capture a city. Ringed ones are those that need to be hit.

I always wished to have possibility drop bomb by one especially on heavy and medium bombers.

For high altitude heavy bomber runs it would be owesome to set delays between each bomb when bombing with Norden.

I'd certainly love to see this done!
I'm finding it pretty annoying right now that I have to drop both torps at once from an He-111.

Is 'Bombspawn' the Correct Setting to Get Single Bomb Drop? - J_Hartikka - 05.11.2008
5.11.2008
Hi mod experts!
I found from my IL2 War 1.2 mod folder files that appear describe the properties of each aircraft. In some of them, there is a parameter 'bombspawn'. I wonder if this is the setting that would allow single bomb drop for each bomber? When opening in my notepad the B25C file MODS\B25C25\4CE938626653AF2A, for instance, I find from there:
Quote:BombSpawn01 _BombSpawn02 _BombSpawn03 !
Each bomber seems have similar files with a little different bomb spawns. For the Blenheim I, I find from file MODS\BLENHEIM-1\CA193AE6AD874922 following bomb spawn settings:
Quote:BombSpawn01 _BombSpawn02 _BombSpawn03 _BombSpawn04 _BombSpawn05 _BombSpawn06
However, I do not know how to modify them to replace two bomb drop with one bomb drop, or even if they are correct ones to modify. Anyone have better knowledge or good guesses about how to do it? :o

Hi J_Hartikka,
BombSpawn has nothing to do with bomb delay. It sets were bomb meshes will spawn when pressing the "release bomb" button (for planes with internal bombload).
Anyway, due to AAA policy, such mod could not be applied to default planes.
