A tale of death, a patching, and a few missing files. - ALOTEF - 16.11.2008
Today, I was looking at the Darwin map, and saw "4.09 patch", and thought it a g ood idea to download it. I downloaded and installed it, and IL2 would not load oast 95%. Fretting, I re-installed 4.08, whihc did nothing but muck it up even more. Four hours of twiddling later, I decided to get some files from a version I have on my other computer, some backups on my USB and the original files from the mucked up version, and patched them together in the D drive. It now works fine. But I can't seem to find any of my saved quick missions. When I go to see the "Quick" folder, all I get is "BoBBlueAirbase00" etc. No .quick files :!:
Where do I find this?
Another problem facing me is that I canno change the display settings in the "display modes" menu. I need to turn off stencil buffer, but It's not working?
As you can tell, I'm not the most computer literate person, but I managed to patch together a new IL2 version. The reason I did not just re-install is because my friend has the disc, and I could not uninstall for some god-unnkown reason!
Any help?
Please?

I am not sure what you exactly did, but maybe you want to start from scratch, using this:
AAA UI 1.0
(The link is inoperative)

Yep, you've broken something.... reinstall time.

What version is your working install?
If you decide to install the UI make sure you follow the directions, move the Mods and files folder out of the game folder before you install UI.
Once you have a working 4.09 you can copy it outside the Ubisoft folder and use it or the original to add mods to, if something gets messed up you have a working backup copy.
Here are some QMBPlus missions to replace your lost ones.: viewtopic.php?t=5944&highlight=qmb+plus+missions

.quick missions are different from QMB or QMBPlus missions... If you've saved your previously created .quick files (found in
...\\Quicks\ ), then simply replace them from your backup.
Note the"s" ... the "IL2\Quick
s" folder is different from "IL2\Missions\Quick" or "IL2\Mods\QMBPlus\Missions\Quick"; the latter folders are for QMB Plus missions (.mis files only, such as the "BoBBlueAirbase00.mis" file you found) while the former is for your own created .quick missions. Clear as mud?

Not sure I can help with the display settings. That looks like it may be a bad install. You can always make your desired changes by editing the conf.ini file, as long as you have an idea of what you're looking to do. Let's start with which video card you have... ATI or NVidia? Depending on that, ask for folks to paste in their conf.ini video settings sections, allowing you to copy/paste into your own and test.
If you intend to deal with mods -which I assume you'd like to do since you're here- then what you should do is copy your complete, hopefully soon correctly functioning, version 4.08m to a new folder. Use that copy to play with the mods, keeping your pristine original installation as a backup.
Note that once IL-2 is installed, you can make as many copies of the installation folder as you like. All of them will work perfectly well. It's only if you've done a complete un-install (via "Add Remove Programs" or the Uninstall feature from the DVD) that you need to worry about re-installing the game. The reinstallation in that case is more to set the correct registry keys for the game.
Actually, it shouldn't be too difficult for someone to find all the registry keys placed by a clean install off the IL-2 1946 DVD and make a simple .reg file for importing those keys. There may be other issues involved with that (copyrights, etc.) so not sure if it's a good idea.
