The game quality and the game IMMERSION doesn't equal the number of AC types we have :!: Wouldn't be better that more efforts go somewhere else: like improving AI routines, improving AC/map/objects visuals,improving weather visuals, implementing some ground activity etc? This community has a lot of enthusiasm, but I feel it's not steered the right direction. :mrgreen:

lot was already done, I'm satisfied with the current progress

although I'm not really interested in new planes since I havent flown all the stock ones yet

#1 improving AI routines
Could we do better then Oleg? I doubt it... plus there arent many Ai programmers around I'm afraid

#2 improving AC/map/objects visuals
Ship pack, Fort & Hanger mod, props, planeshine, list is long...

#3 improving weather visuals
there are at least 3 cloud mod versions + Rus Andrey's cloud color mod

#4 implementing some ground activity
I do that in FMB Smile

One thing I'd welcome though is the recoloring of the very yellow gunfire reflection (internal + external)

Istvan, I'm not saying that progress has not been done in the fields I (we) care. But I just notice the tendency, some months ago you'd see in the beta forums more often stuff NOT related to new aircraft. But I noticed that this sort of stuff cames much seldom NOW on the beta forums, instead new AC threads.
You've got some points but i' ll comment one (though it has general meaning):

You see, Oleg is a company and it must do things such that there's a good compromise between effort and results. He can't afford allowing too many resources going one direction. But we have limitless resources! Digression: I thought of course about why many standard maps are so lifeless, some of them have even geographical mistakes, well this is why, the lack of resources and the lack of time, I cursed Oleg and co for various il2 things, but it has to come to mods era to understand and NOT to curse anymore! Just think how much time does it take to have a new map now!
BUT: unlike Oleg and co, we are a very very big "company" and we have many talents. :!: What are these talents doing? And why?

Well, obviously not everyone has flown, or likes to fly ALL the aircraft already in Il-2. For instance I think it a bit ironic that for instance the aircraft that started the whole sim, the Sturmovik, is probably the least skinned or least referred aircraft of all. Even the poor old U2VS gets more skins made than the Sturmovik.

But even so there are simply dozens and dozens of aircraft that would greatly enhance play and scenario possibilities that are simply not in the game yet. Glaring examples are biplanes, which for all their so much flaunted obsolescence in 1940, were still the mainstay of many an air force of the lesser powers. And that's not even taking into account the biplanes and other obscure and marvelous looking aircraft that were flown during the late 1930's in such conflicts as the Spanish Civil War. Oh for an ungainly looking Vultee or a couple of fast biplane fighters or a few open cockpit, low wing monoplane fighters like a Dewoitine ... those the kind of additions that would lend extra possibilities and extra life to this game.

I know this is a quantity versus quality argument, but I'd say that the game quality of Il-2 is already so good the obvious way to go is adding more planes of more variety.

Besides, with SoW, due out in several months, this is essentially what those who go for quality will be getting - the same old aircraft you find in every WWII flight sim (mainly Bf-109's and Spitfires) re-simmed yet again, but more realistically. I'm looking forward to it of course, but we'll see.

So, regarding new aircraft for Il-2 ... bring 'em on, the more the better.

he,he .... without Lowfighter's findings and brilliant discoveries there wouldn't be any map modding :wink:


@Lowfighter :

it will all turn around once 4.09b1m gets dedicated server patch .... so it gets fully operational online . Do not forget that main interest of IL2 community still lies with online gaming , unfortunately IMHO .

I do agree with Istvan here ..... amazing stuff has been already done regarding enriching gaming experience aside from new planes ( considering my upper stated point) . FC, LAL RONE, Fisneky and vpmedia among others are doing amazing job , but new planes are still the most popular mods and all fame and glory lies with them ( which is totally ok IMHO) .

Whilst there is a lot of projects on the go, what we need to remember is its - as with the subject of a map (ie what country, what improvement etc) - what is the passion of the specific modder working on the given project. For example, me and my beloved Whirly. What is also need to be remembered is that its not everyone working on every project, but each project more or less has one person working on it, or a specific team of people. A lot of these people whilst just starting out probably find that the given work type is more specific to their interests or possible talents.

Take maps for example, whilst I tried making my NZ map, I gave up because it really wasn't my cup of tea, yet the modeling of an aircraft I find much more 'me' Smile

So its really, as I've said in the past, what the modder wants to do, 'nuff said Wink

People will make what interests them, as people will use what they like. A modding community is a win/win for anyone inolved. The more that gets done the quicker the evolution of techniques, the better the end product becomes. It's not surprising that the amount of planes in the works is so large as it's the main point of the sim and the range is so diverse.

I look forward to being able to gain immense pleasure from the time and work that someone has put into their creation. I am grateful that they allow me to decide whether I want to use it or not. I am truly lucky that their sharing of knowledge may allow me to create something myself and share.

maybe Slow is a bit of a tease but I am glad he has chosen to start the planes he has. I would like to see a trainer like the Fw 56 A-1 or Arado 76.

The problem with improving the game as opposed to adding new aircraft is that its a little subjective. How many of us flew missions for real in WW2? Everyone has different impressions on how important certain aspects were and inevitably over-emphasise their favourite point. I'm probably no different, and though I suspect having flown aircraft for real does help, I have to confess the military aeroplanes I've flown are trainers. Nothing too exotic.

Concerning aeroplanes though, there is a certain kudos involved in releasing a new one - I see this with simulators of all kinds on a regular basis, and on some soldier-sims there seems to be an arms race to develop the perfect virtual AK-47 and no-one ever agrees that it is. Crazy. The default one was perfectly good, and if you're in the heat of battle, are you seriously going to study your gun in intricate detail and admire the complex artwork that now takes four times as much texture space on your video card? I think not, but for the user, its a buzz because he convinces himself his AK is better. All this stems from human psychology.

In a sense its no bad thing because it creates a slightly competitive atmosphere as people strive to impress with their latest creation. Aeroplanes are, if you like, a fixed standard to strive for. A game mod may or may not be brilliant buts its too subjective. A poor aeroplane model is obviously so.
